Nice! Hopefully this building will extend all the way to Spring (as the empty lot does). This will really fill in a deadzone in one of the most thriving areas of the Historic Core.

Also, in that piece is the tidbit that the Barry Shy tower at 6th and Main should break ground by end of year.
The 22-story is great news, wish it was on the fast track to break ground.

Barry Shy end of year... Extremely tragic. Last he said was they'd break ground by April. If I had to bet money I'd bet this project doesn't happen at all, seems too ambitious.

Just saw this video on the Wilshire Grand Center Facebook page. Pretty Nice. It does confirm that there will be some specific observation deck included in the design. The vid also has some new renders.

Enjoy.

I don't think Barry Shy ever set a definitive groundbreaking date. He just said that he hoped to get underway by April. That being said, I never thought an April groundbreaking was happening (or even possible). Whether or not Shy could get financing, the project would need to make changes to bring it up to the downtown design guide (i.e. adding ground floor retail). If I recall correctly, he also would have needed to go through a review process (as all large residential projects do).

I've learned to stop worrying too much about delays to groundbreaking times. I think they're difficult to avoid given how much behind the scenes work goes into these things. The Wilshire Grand was supposed to begin the demolition process in June, but they didn't get started until October. Groundbreaking for 9th and Olive was four or five months after the original date.

Same. That would be amazing!

Looks like blackcat beat you to the punch in mentioning that article. but it's so potentially exciting that the more the merrier.

when the corner of 4th & broadway was listed, I immediately thought of the burned down bldg that has been a in that part of the hood for several yrs. But that's actually the corner shown to the left, while the corner owned by Shomof is to the right....

maps.google.com

^ that's a good example of how many layers of cleaning & fixing up exists in dt....where after one layer has been taken care of, a whole new layer exists below, or next to, that. That's why I don't think I'm being too greedy to wanna see more...& more.....& more....& more....& more new projs underway asap.

I thought with all the new devlpt now finally under construction, that I wouldn't...or shouldn't....expect much more to break ground. WRONG! I demand more, much more!!!!

btw, the pics from hunterK of the united artists theater surprised me cuz I thought the former owner of the bldg....a televangelist church....had renovated the theater itself more thoroughly. But the one pic makes the interior...including the seats & walls.....look more faded than I thought it would.

It's nice seeing the pic of coco laurent with several tables outside filled with diners, but not so reassuring to hear fewer ppl were sitting inside. It shows how even if one business is very busy....like across the street at bottega....the new kid on the block won't necessarily get enough overflow to be busy in its own right.....that the new restaurant still will have to prove itself.

blackcat's pic of the new apt tower next to the broad museum is a reminder of just how much there is to look forward to over the next 12 to 24 months. In about a yr, the way all these projs will affect the hood & look against the skyline should become more evident....then when they're almost ready to open....around the end of 2014....that will be when the hood enters the next major phase of growing up & getting better.

I can hardly wait.

Plans exist for that corner opposite this new building to turn it into some kind of mall. There was a render for it but it looked very lame and unimaginative, very 90s. I have no idea what happened to that project though. That building was in a fire I believe and is now a total eyesore.

I hope Shomof will have the sensibility to present a design that is in accordance with the wall-to-wall vernacular of Broadway, not something like what the Onni Group is doing at 9th/Olive. This guy owns a few of the prewar buildings on Spring, so that gives me some hope that he understands what that corner deserves. But you never know.

What an atrocious rendering. I guess they expect people to walk alongside traffic?

Yeah, that was it. Ugh. Better than the burned out wreck that's there now, but that design really doesn't belong downtown.

Best news I have heard in a while. This will definitely be popular with locals and tourists. It will be something very unique in Los Angeles.

Its hard not to get bummed out about a lot of these downtown projects.

THAT being said, the post you're referring to is a positive one. To say Wilshire Grand will be anything less than an absolute GAMECHANGER for DTLA is to do it a disservice. This thing is going to be so exciting.
