Of interest to the architecture people here, I had the unique opportunity to spend the afternoon with the Dean of Architecture at the University of Houston today. The department is sponsored by the founder of my company, Gerald Hines.. It's jury week and I had the opportunity to sit in on the student's presentations to the adjudicators, A very intense experience for those young students.
I asked her what her least favourite aspect of the current trends in contemporary design are. She told me that nowadays it's very popular to use computer generated designs, and young students are gravitating toward a technology when developing their projects. She indicated that the new group of up & coming architects are relying too much on computer generated design, and they are not connecting with the demensions of design that provide texture and human scale in architectural design. I found that very interesting, as we do seem to be seeing projects that lack those elements in this day & age. She talked about getting students to continue to model projects in physical form to ensure dimensions and context are applied to projects. I found this very interesting, as computer generated designs evolve, new technology is required to help emulate the dimensions that are lost in the digital design age. Food for thought
