Umm, no they won't. Most of them probably live downtown already. These jobs are just coming from the burbs. The reason they moved is because they found it almost impossible to recruit young traders who live in the city to work out in Warrenville. And while it sucks to have to commute to the burbs (did it for 5 years), the system is obviously greased for suburbanites to come downtown.

What this move does demonstrate is the very real value in being downtown as opposed to the burbs. Who knows, maybe Motorola will wise up one day as well and move out the shit-hole that is Schaumburg.

Irish developer in deal to buy land at Franklin Point

An Irish condominium developer with one project in the South Loop is getting ready for its second development in the neighborhood on a 2-acre property at Harrison and Wells streets.

Sources say Limerick, Ireland-based Chieftain Group has signed a contract to pay D2 Realty Services Inc. nearly $20 million for the parcel, part of a larger vacant 8-acre tract known as Franklin Point. Russland Capital Group, a Skokie developer, bought the other 6-acre parcel within Franklin Point in February.

I would say that's why I left that stagnant neighborhood, but such views are being ever-more-legitimized in all other neighbs in the city (with possible exception of Streeterville), so maybe at some point I'll just skip town. At least Preckwinkle, at some point in the last few years, seems to be actually generally favor density (she's been pushing for a mid-rise on the 53rd St McMobil site, for example). I really hope the ugly surface lots in Indian Village get developed; if the best argument the neighbors have is their precious views to which they have no "right", then the building should have no trouble going through...right? Right.

Dan in Chicago, as a resident of this neck of the woods, would you be able send a letter of support for this one?

And for the record Toni Preckwinkle is quite possibly the most pro-active alderman in the city right now, who is actually recruiting development for undeserved areas of the ward, understands why density is important and is not afraid of some opposition when the betterment of her ward is at stake. She embraces new development while other alderman chase it away in the name of recruiting NIMBY votes for the next election.

So Preckwinkle won't support the project until the developer has financing in place. Anybody have suggestions on how to secure financing for a large real estate development without entitlements? I'm sure the developer could use them, so send along...
