lolzxzxlolzxzx, I blamed others for continuing the discussion after a consensus was reached that it should end. I was happy to oblige, but several Mobilians still wanted to continue the discussion and after being accused falsely of always posting unflattering pics of Mobile, being asked why I posted aerials which didn't show all of Downtown Mobile (even though what may be missing in one photo can be seen in the other), and reading other commentary that needed to be addressed, I was drawn back into a discussion that I would otherwise have been willing to let die the first time around. I also wanted to explain why I felt compelled to post the aerials in the first place (got tired of MobileAl1 constantly belittleing Birmingham for the past 3 years).

Yes, I sent you a private message to avoid hashing things out with you in this thread. I did not threaten to ban you if you continued the Birmingham-Mobile discussion (you obviously love to twist my words and make false accusations against me). I warned you that you had crossed the line with your personal vendetta against me with hateful, "intentionally inciteful" commentary that is in violation of the forum rules. And apparently you need to look up the definition of "bashing" since I haven't been doing that now or in the past.

No problem Exodus...thanks for the retraction! BTW, I was curious when you said that you "might have given [your] opinion [about Birmingham] in the past" which prompted me to do a review of the messages you've posted since joining the forum in January. I didn't notice you posting any bad opinions of Birmingham, BUT one thing stood out--you've posted a LOT of comments about Detroit. Now I know who you are! I can't remember your old username, but I remember that you used to live in Detroit, married a girl from Mobile, and while you were planning your future move to your wife's hometown, you did post some negative or unflattering opinions of Birmingham (I seem to recall you bashing Birmingham on occasion, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt since the forum archives don't go back that far).

MobileAl1, I did state twice that you have engaged in bashing (not in this thread necessarily, but OFTEN in the past and even as recently as 5/23/06 in the "thoughts on birmingham" thread) AND belittleing of Birmingham (i.e., trying to make Birmingham look smaller than it actually is...this time around by stating grossly underestimated distances regarding where signs of "civilization" become apparent when approaching Birmingham). Regardless, I'm VERY glad to see that you are in agreement with B'ham Bound's resolution to "[squash] all beef between any and all Mobile and Birmingham forumers." I wholeheartedly endorse and support this resolution too. Perhaps I should delete anything posted from this point on that is in violation of this resolution (at least in this thread).

Did I ever post that website on this forum before called something like mobile-then and now.com or something? Its really cool. It shows before and after pictures of certain blocks and alleys and houses in downtown and midtown from the early 1900s and what they've become

A typical example would be some beautiful home on Dauphin street, and then shows how its now like a Burger King or something.

I dunno, that picture just reminded me of it.

Someone posted a link to it a while back, but please feel free to post it again. I always enjoy sites like that (there's a very extensive one for Atlanta).

The pics from that site are incredible. I have heard that over 30,000 structures were destroyed in the 50s-early 80's. Many of which would now be nearly 300 years old. Although we still have a lot of historic architecture, these really make me sick:

This hotel opened in 1837

It is now a parking garage

Even more common is the destruction of a lovely building:

for a fast food joint

or even worse

a parking lot

Check out the link B'ham Bound posted for about 100 more.

Downtown Mobile
The density is incredible. Interestingly enough, you can notice the roof top resaurant/bar on top of the Battle House Hotel. They are putting that back in as part of the renovation. I can see them on the roof right now!

This pircture would have had to have been taken from atop the Cawthorn Hotel, which is now of course a parking lot. Even though this shot is impressive, given the vantage point, this view only shows what would have been less than 10% of the city at the time - its what would be 1/4 of what's now dowtown and the rest would be the homes up and off Government, Dauphin, Springhill, etc...

^That partial pano is Absolutely depressing............. to the point of speechlessness.

Downtown Mobile was as dense as the french Quarter yet twice the size. FQ=1/2 sq mi; Dtown Mob=1 sq mi

sorry about that post was a mistake. well, we can all think "progress" for the destruction. Maybe developers that build downtown can look at these pictures and try to replicate the density and some of the older buildings that have been destroyed. My house was built in that year (1909) in Midtown.

I have some news for those wondering about tenants in the RSA. I have heard from a VERY reliable source that a company/firm (small to medium sized) will be moving their headquarters to the tower from another state. They have 200+ employees.

This deal is 99% done. Apparently Bronner himself is going out looking for potential movers - a good sign.

Great news for Mobile if true. 200+ employees wont nearly fill it, but that's a good start in any case.

Also- I found this on the city of Mobile's website...

http://www.cityofmobile.org/news.php?view=full&news=852

Apparently, Continental Airlines' in-flight magazine is calling Mobile one of the "Top 8 Waterfront Cities in the World."

"Mobile has been chosen alongside the well-known waterside destinations of Amsterdam, Chicago, Los Cabos, Montego Bay, San Diego, Miami and Hong Kong."

Wow... that's impressive. Mobile is one of my favorites for sure, but over Charleston, Savannah, New Orleans, etc? Certainly is good publicity for Mobile, though. Is Continental the main carrier in Mobile or is it Delta or who?

Delta is the major carrier. It is the only carrier that sends mainline planes to MOB and accounts for 40%+ of the passengers using the airport. Continental is in second with 20%.

These figures are based on last month's statistics.

Ha....I find that funny. One of the top 8. Not trying to talk bad about my own city...but thats crazy, unless they are talking about the metro. (even then thats a little crazy)

The waterfront usually belongs to the "city", not the metro.
