We will soon be getting the "great clump breaker" we have so eagerly waited for. There will be a tower (118m) just between those two tall cranes on the edge of the CBD that will be our new tallest for downtown. It's only 6m taller than PDV C but will be closer and on slightly higher ground so it will be the first to break the great wall that is our western CBD, particularly visually from this angle. Here's hoping for 1-2 more and maybe 140m plus to really break the plane!

I'd love to see 2016 and actual 2024 Calgary with these in the middle.

True. Gatineau silhouette has good variety that Ottawa is missing. Hopefully the the curvy and tall-ish Relevé+Renaissance Marriott currently u/c are completed in the CBD, that will at least help the Ottawa side. And LeBreton.

EDIT - AuxTown already covered it.

Tunney's Pasture Skyline in Ottawa, with Westboro behind.

This view will be wildly different in 5-7 years, because the West end of Ottawa has no height restrictions and there are dozens of towers up to 40 floors proposed and approved.

Nice shot Martin, when did you take that? I'm surprised to see the water has ice on it.

Ottawa's new central library is really transforming the butt end of the old tabletop downtown skyline.

/\ looking good, but curious to see if the horizontal banding gives it a heavy institutional look when construction is complete.

Also the Calgary shots are interesting for the juxtaposition of camera angle/perspective/zoom - giving the impression of a claustrophobic skyline versus one that is generously spaced out.

I assume this photographer is not on SSP, if so my apologies. Downtown shot with some Metrotown (and Mount Baker) in the background.

Beautiful images of Calgary. I miss seeing more posts about the city, and it's construction. That being said, those were some really interesting angles. Thanks for sharing them.

Vancouver looks incredible in that last angle. Almost like a carte-des-vite.

too bad that it looks nothing like this. Mount Baker is there, and you can see it if you are out in the Straights of Georgia, or atop Grouse Mountain...but it never looms like that over the city.

That Vancouver shot is wonderful.

As for Calgary, I have always been a lover of it's skyline and still think it vies with Toronto for the nation's best. It doesn't have the massive size and expanse of Toronto's but its buildings are distinct from one another as opposed to Toronto {and Vancouver's} blue glass menagerie. In Calgary you can distinctively see each building as opposed to being a solid blob. The growth in the city's Beltline and Eastern Village has been very impressive.

It's not my picture (see the link).

As for the ice, it's early February in Montreal. There is ice and snow everywhere.

From Grouse Mountain:
Oh for sure, there's some lens and field of focus work going on here, but still, it's set up almost like a theatrical composition, with a whimsical background and the city as the main subject.

That wonderful Vancouver pic was taken with a 250mm lens. That's a huge amount of perspective flattening.

For comparaison, this is the best I could do with a 70mmm lens a couple years ago.

I fully agree. I think the downtown is set up in a way where it could really be vibrant and notable in just a few (well, ten or more) years. The pandemic took a lot of steam out of our cities nationwide, but with investments in transit and other services, I think we can see this pick up more. Of course a massive push with immigration helps too.

Transit isn't an issue for DT Calgary. Crime has been a large problem with the 30% vacancy rate leaving swaths of the core empty. We'll see how much the office to residential conversions help as they start to come on line in the next couple years. There's also some revitalization happening with a massive reno of the Glenbow museum and a soon to be unveiled revamp of the performing arts centre. East Village has slightly stagnated with only minor new projects happening. The Drop In Centre has been creating problems for new residents in condos across the street, and also for the urban Superstore in the podium of Arris.

Was that from this summer with the wildfire smoke?
