I think the original estimate for the project was something like $130 million, which seemed a little optimistic to me at the time. I'm glad there wasn't any wrangling or tug-of-war over the extra $$ for this project.

The tower crane should be up at the Bay pretty soon. The base is all done…they were working on it today.

Amazing!

My employer is due to find out in the coming months whether we’ve been awarded any work on this and the other pieces of the PP work. Hoping to get to work on some piece of it all.

^Oh haha thanks for sharing the photo. It must've been pretty wild back then seeing these massive buildings like the Leg and The Bay popping up in a little prairie town in the middle of no where.

From the Winnipeg Architecture Web page:

"To build the foundation for the Bay Building, workers had to remove 150,000 tons of earth from the site. It took 300 men, 120 teams of horses, 20 trucks, and two steam shovels to get the job done."

I wonder if those steam shovels were also some sort of pile auger. I am pretty sure the Bay (and the Leg) are on deep caissons on till or bedrock

^ very cool - thanks for sharing that. I wonder what kind of machine they used back then for piling - or if it was done partially by manual labour.

It looks like they dug out the site straight down ~ 20 feet from grade.

Labour was cheap and expendable back then. Probably a few workers in the hole with a pick and shovel filling a bucket on a rope that was hauled to the top and dumped into the horse cart and returned to the bottom.

A city of Winnipeg report on the Bay building I found last night mentioned during foundation construction in 1926 a large 68 foot crevice was found running along Portage Ave. Before it was filled with concrete a worker sent down to investigate said it was quite interesting. It was surmised the crevice was left over from the ice age and had filled in with sand and limestone chunks.

Very interesting. Is there a link to that report? Would be interesting to read it.

That's it, teardown the building open it up, we can market it as Grand Canyon North.
