I think it's more about money than continued bus service to OC passengers.

On a related note, the Freiman entrance will be closed each evening 10 PM to 5:30 AM until further notice. I guess this means late night service will move to Rideau Street a couple hours earlier than normal http://www.rideaucentre.com/en/centreinfo/Pages/FreimanEntranceRenovation.aspx

I'd have to think there will be at least 20 to 30 more retailers after that...mainly in 2016.

That is only the entrance at the traffic lights? There are two other entrances - the food court and the corner entrances.

I would have preferred more of a curve to the corner of the Simon's Glass wall, otherwise best renderings yet. Even the interior renos look better than I expected.

Is the space under the new expansion going to be parking? I'm still secretly dreaming that eventually they'll convert it to basement level retail connected to the Bay and increased links to the LRT station, a bit like Montreal's McGill station.

What are the two colourful panels on the Rideau St. facade close to the entrances? Are they digital screens or just paintings/art canvases?

Really hoping they art large digital screens!!!! Out with the old, in with the new

Yup, parking. I wish they would have built at least on underground retail level for a seamless transition between the mall and the Rideau Station concourse but I don't think that will ever happen.

That said, we will at least have a few indoor subway-mall connection; the Transportation Building and an elevator going down from the main Skywalk to Freiman's and the Rideau Station concourse level.

I don't know. Those panels used to feature sort of "reflections" or old Rideau Street façades.

On a different note, I would absolutely love it if they converted Nicholas between Rideau and Besserer to a pedestrian plaza.

I'd laugh if this wasn't actually something I hear in Ottawa.

I checked out the size of the Eaton Centre food court to make a comparison. The Eaton Centre food court only fits 50 more people than the new Rideau Centre food court (900 vs. 850) and has eight more restaurants (24 vs. 16). You'd think the Rideau food court would fit a lot less people than the Eaton Centre's.

Answer: artwork.

Quote:
Commissioned Second Stage Final Proposal, exterior glazing integrated public art for Cadillac Fairview’s Rideau Centre, Ottawa

Excerpt from the Concept for Watermarks:

The Rideau Centre is located in close proximity to several waterways: the Ottawa River, the Rideau River and the Rideau Canal. These bodies of water ‘mark’ the history and present-day profile of Ottawa, having contributed to the city’s growth and development in industry, commerce, transportation, and leisure. Watermarks, three integrated artworks that employ close up views of water imagery, speak to a sense of Ottawa’s place and character, calling to mind these nearby environmental features. By celebrating both heritage and contemporary architecture, the design of the Rideau Centre revitalization embraces changing aesthetics over time. Water is an apt metaphor for this redevelopment as it too embodies an enduring presence, while also evoking a sense of renewal in its changing surface. The three Watermarks therefore also ‘mark’ the unique identity of the new Rideau Centre. Like the translucent paper watermark designs that are most visible when held up to the light, the digitally printed glass artworks are further enhanced by backlighting to create a ‘lightbox’ effect at night.

Each of the three expanses of glazing are digitally printed with a composite image of close-up photographs of water, featuring details of animated, organic lines and forms. Although they realistically document Ottawa area waters, the photographs also transcend conventions of land- or water-scape to become abstracted images. Each of the glazed surfaces is filled by one main image that is intercut with interspersed vertical swaths from other close-up photographs. These inserts create rhythmic movement across each glazed area. The rhythm and structure created by the inserted segments echo the cadence and proportions of the architectural elements in the nearby heritage portions of the Rideau Centre. In this way, the resulting patterns of vertical forms allude to the historic retail street façade.

I'm pleasantly surprised. Anyone have the comparison to the old food court?
