The Lion's Gate {or more specifically the Causeway thru Stanley Park} is on a 100 years lease which is up in about 20 years. Of course the province has avoided the problem assuming the city will let it go for another 100 years but the parks Board has been both adamant and consistent...........the Causeway's days are numbered.

The Parks Board will keep the Causeway for bikes/pedestrians and maybe buses but cars are out of luck. Unless an underground route is built thru Stanley Park, in 20 years that maybe the most vacant 7 lanes of road in the country. The urban Canyon will still be there but none of the lights on the road.
Not a chance, especially since the NPA just took over the Parks board. People are sick of that extremist hippie garbage.

Also no chance of making the middle lane bus only. You'd have to have good transit on the north shore for that to be even remotely possible, like maybe not have buses vanish into thin air when they're supposed to show up.

I don't think it would be such a bad idea to build an underground replacement route under the park, across the inlet, and with a better connection to the Upper Levels Hwy.
Then keep the causeway and lions gate open to pedestrians, bikes, and maybe transit. The bridge is too iconic to ever replace.
Of course that type of thing probably wouldn't go over well on the North Shore.

North Shore would love anything that makes it easier to drive downtown. It's downtown/Vancouver that would be opposed.

But what about the upgrades to the Upper Levels highway that would be necessary to accommodate the extra traffic? Seems to me that a lot of people on the North Shore are opposed to upgrades that might lead to more traffic through town.

It's not really necessary or even physically possible, unless the government wants to buy hundreds of houses at $2+ million a pop. Hwy 1 traffic comes from/to Ironworkers bridge more than Lions Gate. Lions Gate is more of a local commuter bridge for West Vancouverites and the western half of North Van. I live equidistant between the two bridges and choose Ironworkers, although 10 years ago I chose Lions Gate.

Extending 1st street across Capliano River and having it connect to Marine somewhere near Ambleside beach would have more of an impact than any highway stuff on the western north shore. And plans are already in place to fix the awful 1960s highway interchanges on the eastern north shore. Other than wider bridges or a third crossing (I'm a proponent of a crossing from Vancouver's Main St to North Van's Pemberton Ave), that's the best they can/should do to the highway.

Obviously investing in transit service would need to be a part of the plan. Even if only due to the major increase in passenger volumes.

Maybe a little river canyon.
Damn that's nice for a smallish city.

Great vid! I know nothing about Edmonton but it seems to have a pretty nice feel to it around the holt renfrew (even has a tv screen on the corner!). Is the Areana district going to have buildings up around the casino part?

Building flush with the lot line with no set backs is key to developing a fabulous urban canyon. It creates a strong uniform street apron. You can see in the last photo how Cinema Condo diminished the potential of the urban canyon by setting the tower 30-40 feet back. The first tall glass condo one sees (Pinnacle) would be blocked by Cinema if they had done that, but now sits off to the right.

Way further down on the same side of the street it happens again. Rather than First Canadian Place mostly blocking trump and contributing to the street wall, it's pushed so far back from Richmond you can't even see it.

Well FCP fronts King Street, Adelaide is its back door. Also cinemas podium ads to the street wall at the same height as some of the older stock that line the street.
