well I can't argue with your numerous documentaries and reports, but the rest of it seems a bit off. Stop wal-mart and you'll get Zellers and Sears. What's the difference besides better supply chain management. Sprawl is a planning issue. People are only going to stop shopping at wal-mart when the true costs of shopping there are built into the prices, which means road tolls and parking lots paying full fees and rates, when we have stronger principles and enforcement of the provincial policy statement, growth plans, and urban official plan, and probably has something to do with western deficits and Asian bond-holders.

When you say the rest is a bit off, I'm not following you, I don't think we disagree on anything. Of course it's a planning issue, the city could say "no" to new WalMarts and other big box developments, particularly on fruitlands or key employment lands like MIP for example.

Yes, it was the right decision and shows it can be done.

Plans for former Walmart location

http://www.hamiltonnews.com/news/pla...mart-location/

The Walmart, which was located at Eastgate Square since 1994, closed its doors Thursday night, just in time for the Jan. 27 opening of the Walmart Supercentre at South Service Road and Centennial Parkway.

Don Burton, executive vice-president, retail group, Redcliff Realty Management, which manages Eastgate Square, said the company has been “working on a redevelopment plan” for the former Walmart location.

Instead of one large retailer, Burton said the plan includes having multiple tenants occupy the space. While he said more details would be available in a few weeks, he said construction would likely start this summer.

Excited to see a Starbucks coming to Main/Emerson. They sell Stabucks coffee and latte at HHS but variety would be great.

Apparently a Starbucks is going into a new building across the street from the Bangkok Spoon in down-town Dundas.

I was told a couple years ago that Starbucks was going to build on the empty lot beside the sub shop. It would be a big boost to an already thriving area.

Starbucks finding home in bustling Dundas
Dundas Starbucks Starbucks is opening a store in downtown Dundas in March.

http://www.thespec.com/news/business...ustling-dundas

Downtown Dundas is squeezing in yet another commercial building on its already busy King West strip.

A two-storey office building with a Starbucks on the street-level floor is nearly ready for business.

A spokesperson for the American coffee company said the store is slated to open in March.

Doug McKerlie, owner of the 4,000-square-foot building, said he hasn’t had time to market the office space yet.

“Ideally, we’d like some tech or creative company to locate there,” he said.

Allyson Wenzowski, chair of the Dundas division of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, says there’s a lot more commercial activity in the downtown than the small-town atmosphere would suggest.

“People are moving from Toronto, or retiring ... they come for that small-town feeling but want to be part of a big city,” she said. “There are offices above stores, law offices ... in an old heritage home … an industrial area at the end of Hatt Street. There’s a lot more here than meets the eye.”

Wenzowski said she’s not worried about the competition for already established coffee shops such as Domestique-Café Cyclo Sportif and Espresso Café and, of course, two downtown Tim Hortons.

“I don’t think the market is saturated. There are lots of new condos going in as well.”

A 2010 study by the City of Hamilton also found downtown Dundas has a strong retail mix with a lot of “youthful energy” and a “low vacancy rate.”

It found that in 2009 the vacancy rate was 2 per cent.

Some of the retail mix included merchandise at 35 per cent, convenience goods at 13 per cent, food service at 14 per cent, and other services at 32 per cent.

Starbucks itself has a reputation of locating in healthy, established neighbourhoods.

“Starbucks continually looks for opportunities in communities where we believe we will be a relevant and a positive addition,” the company said in a statement.

Wal-Mart to spend $750m to revamp Canadian stores

MISSISSAUGA, ONT. Wal-Mart Canada says it plans to spend more than $750 million this year to open, relocate or remodel 73 retail stores, including former Zellers locations.

The world’s biggest retailer says the initiative will create more than 14,000 jobs when factoring in store employees, as well as trade and construction jobs.

Included on the list of stores are 39 former Zellers locations that Wal-Mart purchased last year.

The move comes as competition on the Canadian retail market heats up with the entry of fellow discount retailer Target next year.

The company plans to open 125 to 135 stores.

Target has purchased the leasehold interests of 189 sites currently operated by Zellers Inc. and it says about $10 million to $11 million will be invested to remodel each facility.

My apologies for a double post, but this post has new, specific info about the fate of 2 Zellers stores in Hamilton.

The Zellers at Upper Sherman & Mohawk East will begin it's liquidation sale on March 14, and close its' doors for good on June 2.

The Zellers at the Meadowlands in Ancaster will begin its' liquidation sale in mid-July and close for good as Zellers on Sept. 29.

I was also told by an employee at the Meadowlands Zellers location today that there would be a Walmart Supercentre built at Upper Sherman and Mohawk East.

Why would they build another one there when they just opened a new one at Upper James and Fennel? The distance between the stores is ridiculous.

I think that Walmart may be thinking about a dynamic about Hamilton Mountain that goes like this.

The Walmart Supercentre on Upper James Street would be a store for the geo-region for anywhere from Upper Paradise or Garth Street to the west side of Upper Wentworth, and a Walmart Supercentre located at Upper Sherman and Mohawk East would be for everything from the east side of Upper Wentworth all the way to Mountain Brow Boulevard.

And like I said previously, a Walmart Supercentre for Upper Sherman and Mohawk East could play off the Lime Ridge Mall district and help to benefit all of East Mountain.

There's that word again...benefit.

I was also unaware we were referring to that area of the Mountain as the Limeridge Mall district. Sort of like the Distillery district, or Yorkville or SOHO or Little Italy. Makes it sound real klassy.
