I was lucky enough to go out on the Fraser and Pitt Rivers in my brother's boat.

First I got some shots of the Skytrain Skybridge, Pattullo Bridge, and heavy rail bridge in New Westminster.

The Skybridge is my favorite piece of transit infrastructure in Canada.

After that was the Port Mann Bridge.

And last one is the Pitt River Bridge

It always surprises me how green the core can look from above. You won't see a leaf at street level, almost all of the trees (like, excluding six total trees) are in the central courtyards of the rowhouse blocks. But you get away and above, and it looks like a park (Also, that main visible street on the left is Duckworth - third up from the harbour after Harbour Drive, then Water Street. It's not our main downtown drag, just clarifying because it looks like it would be in this pic and we're a LITTLE tiny bit better than Duckworth lol).

Brianna Gosse 2 by Zach Bonnell, on Flickr

Brianna Gosse (above) is AMAZING. I love her so much. Here's a sample, she's the first one who sings, a song she wrote about going home after living in Boston. What a voice! She's also hilarious and very self-aware. A lot of the artists there for this, including Amelia Curran, my personal fave of all time, have had some pretty rough lives - and Brianna is all... acknowledges she's upper middle class suburban, doesn't really have much shit to deal with, and some of her songs are stupid.

Video Link

The last one, the guy singing, he's the guitarist/secondary vocalist for The Once, which is my fave group (Amelia is solo artist, lol). Anyhow, that song cracks me up. He introduces it everywhere by talking about how driving across Newfoundland is one of those things that makes or breaks your life. And he and his then-GF of many years set out from Corner Brook for St. John's, and it was clear after a few miles that they were done and breaking up, but still had to drive the remaining 9 hours together.

And maybe, baby, maybe
You just can't say you hate me
This far into your life
And maybe, just maybe
You're thinking my way lately
And if it's over tonight
Let's finish the drive

Some pics of New Westminster.

I love the density and layers it has for a suburb.

New Westminster Station feels as if it is straight out of Asia.

The Much Music Video Awards is phenomenal. I've never watched more than 10 minutes of it on TV but I have seen some clips here and there. The scale and the visuals are highly impressive. Don't know what other awards shows take place outside but anytime you can pull that off on multiple urban streets with multiple stages and still make it seem like an intimate venue indoors then my hats off to the organizers.

I work a 10 minute walk away and I have to promise myself that next year I'll walk down there on the Friday to see how they set this all up. It seems like it gets bigger and better each year.

Anyone been there?

A few recently-uploaded ones, not my own. Set to JLo in Spanish. She always struck me as someone who isn't really all that good in Spanish, I asked jeddy1989 (he's fluent, lived in Venezuela a while before it went to shit, etc.) - it turns out she's super fluent, to the point it's obvious Spanish was her first language at home. And she has SUPER GHETTO Caribbean Spanish, with dropped syllables and the works. That's awesome to me, she's pretty posh as a pop singer in English, and in Spanish she's like a rapper in terms of her accent/vocab/etc. That's your unrelated Spanish lesson for the day.

It's a fun place to go swimming. A horrible place to go hiking. You feel like you've done 10K through the sand and you're close enough to still hit your car with a rock.

Does Newfoundland have any beach culture? Suntanning and swimming?

Not in the way you mean. We go to beaches and all of that, and there are a couple of ocean beaches and a shitload of lake beaches where you could come and feel what you mean by beach culture but with colder water. But the culture here of beaches is still very much a camping culture. Swimming is something the kids do in the afternoon. Most activities are at The campsite.

Vancouver's Yaletown has the reputation of being a lively neighbourhood that looks rather dull and gray from all the glass buildings. Recently a controversial 416 ft tall colorful mural went up on the side of a new 43-floor tower, bringing a splash of color to the neighborhood.

This is what most people think of when they talk about Yaletown. Gray glass towers spot the waterfront.

I like the idea of the mural, I wish more buildings had them and at that scale. But that particular one is like 1980s bus seats.

Generally I like them and while I don't mind the colour choices and design, I am not loving it.
