The full-time tenant of Olympic Stadium is: 'Shutting down the debate for need of a large stadium in Montreal'.

It keeps the pressure off the province and city, because they can point to the Big O and say: "There's one already. It's hardly used, but it's there if we need it."

I expect it'll still be around in 2076.

Maybe Quebec can institute some North Korean-style mass games to boost morale and give the stadium some use?

Just replace Kim Jong-Un with Legault

If Montreal was being used as a World Cup city, I don't think anyone would have minded but Montreal did pull out themselves

Definitely. Montreal had close to a lock on one of the host city spots, if it wanted it.

It was actually quite a surprise when that was revealed considering the bid had 3 in Canada and Mexico respectively.

Well yeah it makes sense why USA would get the bulk of the games because without them do you really think Mexico or Canada stood a chance at hosting 2026 by themselves as single nation bids? I doubt it

Plus with 48 countries in from 2026 and beyond, it isn't just going to be 1 country hosting it is going to be 2 countries or even 3 countries or even 4 countries hosting now

I actually prefer single-country hosting by a longshot, but that's just me.

Something has been added to the rafters of the main lobby at the Avenir Centre in Moncton:

Team Canada tryout squad introduced tomorrow afternoon on the plaza in front of the Avenir Centre. Tryout camp this weekend in the Hub City and Team Canada will play an all-star AUS hockey team on Sunday and Monday at the Avenir Centre, followed by a couple of pre tournament games at the Avenir Centre next weekend.

And so it begins (the World Juniors that is)..........

Depends on who buys the team I guess. If a developer(s) is involved, for sure they will take the current arena lands for all they are worth. If no developer is involved, then it might be easier to up-zone and sell for a quick cash infusion to help pay for the LeBreton arena (and the team).

Oil money, bribes, and corruption also enters the room

I do agree though, I much prefer seeing it hosted by a single country

BC Place and BMO Field are definitely going to be places to be especially in 2026 for this World Cup especially BMO Field because they apparently are going to be expanding seats for 2026 so overall capacity in the stadium will be World Cup appropriate

The City of Saskatoon is continuing land acquisitions around its now-confirmed arena site. They're suggesting the new properties allow flexibility for an east-west facility orientation, if desired.

Buh bye

On Dec. 12, city council voted 8-5 in favour of demolishing the out-of-use Northlands Coliseum at a cost of $35 million. It currently costs up to $1.5 million annually to maintain the building, according to the city. “It’s been put off for far too long, and we need to take responsibility for this,” said Coun. Ashley Salvador of Ward Métis, where the building is located, adding that the demolition will allow the city to proceed with the Edmonton Exhibition Lands redevelopment project. Salvador also said administration will look into options to partner with industry to assist in the demolition. Mayor Amarjeet Sohi voted against the demolition, citing concerns over the cost.

^ is there no use for that building anymore? The demolition costs equal about 20 more years of operating costs...

demolishing it to the point of a near bare building with a huge internal column free space --- can think for a handful of uses that would be useful, that one would never build. Like a huge soundstage! Reserving it for a future farmers market. I think Council explored grand concepts with external partners instead of putting a bit of their own ingenuity into the space, and taking a bit of a risk.

If Calgary gets around to moving out of the Saddledome, I will be advocating for a similar move here. May as well try to use it if possible. a 100,000 square foot space with high ceilings and a roof that can hold substantial loads is something that doesn't come around every day.
