OK, so the neighbourhood is profoundly ugly, but this house, not so much, imho. Although it seems weird to pack so much house into such a tight lot - I wonder why they didn't acquire more land?

The proportions and materials do look surprisingly good for a suburban new-build of that size. The subdivision is... eclectic, in design choices if not colour palette. It's also weird seeing that area for me as I drove through it countless times as a kid when it was just outside the city's built boundary and felt very rural. Now it's one of the more upscale suburbs

Another example in North York of "What's going on with the windows?". It has to be a style thing from back then because this makes no sense. I assume there is a bedroom in the front of the second level but even if it's just a hallway there and a window that lets in light, there should be more than just one.

I feel like North York and York have way more examples of the uglies and the awkwards than Scarborough, Etobicoke and East York.

My guess would be two (or more) bedrooms upstairs, with the small window either being a hallway or a bathroom.

If you took away the terraces at the top I would have said that was a medical office. Why on earth would someone design this and think people would want to come home to that? Even if it's a rental, people should have some colour in their lives.

I actually respect the kitschiness of that house. It has gusto.

Reminds me of this Greek restaurant in Calgary:

Scarboro didn't want to be left out of the awkward window discussion so they offered these submissions.

The first house made up for the missing window on the front by over compensating on the side.

And this triangular house is very interesting. An interesting variety of window sizes. That tiny window beside the door is so cute. And that garage is like the ones I see usually in the heart of the city where it's too small to realistically fit a car so it's only used as storage. Which begs the question, why not just make it bigger? Sometimes the house itself is pretty small so it's kind of proportionate, but I've also seen them on decent sized houses.

Are these before and after pics?

IMO, the first picture make it look more tolerable. It's the white vinyl windows that throw it for me, should have gone with coloured frames like in the other pics. Basically combine the two looks.

Maybe. But I think we may have here a Greek striving working class person with Trumplestiltskinian aspirations and taste.
