Oh sure, that statement was definitely rhetorical and open-ended. I admit readily that there are examples of these types of mid-rise developments that are worse rather than better...I mean, on our end, not all of New York's old housing is as beautiful and worthy of being preserved as that of Soho, the Village, etc. (or they've already been so bastardized by renovations or just left to deteriorate that there's nothing to save anymore). Atlanta entertains me because while we know the outcome of New York City's old townhomes and tenements, the result of these mid-rise blocks remain to be seen. I wonder how they will age? As someone else said a few posts back, I think the gate will outlast the buildings around it, unless they age much better than many of us expect.
And yeah I think the proliferation of glass-curtain-wall-and-balcony towers in Downtown, Midtown and Buckhead will certainly serve to define the cityscape and give it a recognizable image that is distinctly "Atlanta" as time goes on. I don't think that'd be the worst thing.
