Two more CC Wawas -- one at East Market and the other replacing I. Goldberg's (wonder where they're going to go). Is Wawa's plan to be our version of Duane Reade or Harris Teeter?

It also mentioned another WaWa at 1900 Market Street that is opening soon. Saw that space under construction but did not hear what it was - was this previously reported?

Earlier this year there was one announced for the new building going in at 22nd and South (still technically Center City), replacing Omega Pizza:

When I saw that link I had assumed that would be one of the Wawas mentioned. Nope.

BTW 12th & Market --> 13th & Chestnut --> Broad & Walnut. Will the next one be at 15th & Locust? /s

Wawa should have jumped at the opportunity to take a retail space in Morgan Hall at Temple. There are currently no Wawa locations around Temple, while there are two Wawa locations in University City. They would make a killing in the Cecil B. Moore/Templetown area! Temple has a high concentration of students from the Delaware Valley who are already familiar with the Wawa brand. Also, there are no Wawa locations in North Philly (unless one considers 19th and Callowhill to be North Philly), so there would be little concern about cannibalization of other locations. Maybe they can locate in 1324 North Broad?

I can't believe that I and other Temple students have to travel from Cecil B. Moore to Walnut-Locust just to satisfy our Wawa needs! I would bet that most of us would much rather have a Wawa than the multiple 7/11 locations on/around campus haha!

Yes, it was reported.

Between the 17-18th Arch - Wawa, and this new one -- two Wawa's within 5 min walk.... DAMN.

Ikr? And remember, the Broad & Walnut one's only been open for a year now. When I was an undergrad, I had to go all the way to the one on Aramingo or the one at 17th & Arch to get my Wawa fix!

Also they let 7-11 totally make a strong presence in Philly over the last number of years.

Although I have régional affinity for Wawa, I notice they have become salt and sugar pushers; at least at 7-11 it is possible to purchase a bag of almonds unadulterated by salt, or a bag of mixed nuts and fruit not drowned in salt and sugar.

ANYWAY, the my actual reason for posting is to inquire whether there has been any progress on the Hale Building, 13xx Chestnut Street. I usually notice progress on développements and am surprised I have completely forgotten about this project. I really hope it is a certainty.

Don't forget 9th & Walnut and 2nd & Lombard. But yeah, I see the trend you're eluding to.

*alluding (I am a professional writer, after all -- don't expect me to not notice these things. Elude means "actively avoid", like "the escaped convict eluded the guards", while allude means "refer to".)

You forgot the one at 17th & Arch. And how wonderful ... actually maybe not, it was nasty inside ... would it have been if the one at 11th & Arch had stayed open?

Nothing is happening at Hale and its been stalled for months. After the asbestos demo there haven't been many signs of progress. Not sure what is going on here. Initially I think the project was supposed to be done late this year.

Really? My perspective is the opposite. When I think 7-11 I think junk food. Pizza, hot dogs, tostitos, and cheap coffee. When I think Wawa I think I can definitely get a healthy option. A Turkey hoagie, or a wrap maybe. Plus they have those little protein packs with nuts, eggs, and the like. Add quality coffee and this transplant is hooked.

We used to go to the one at Rodin Place.

Royal Theater site on South Street to be developed by new owner

Quote:
Another developer is taking over Carl Dranoff's plan to build apartments and retail at the site of the long-defunct Royal Theater on South Street.

Robert Roskamp, best known as the backer of the Roskamp Institute, a medical-research center in Sarasota, Fla., purchased the 1524 South St. property from music mogul Kenny Gamble's Universal Cos. last month, Roskamp said in an interview Monday.

Dranoff had been working with Gamble on a proposal to build about 50 apartments with ground-floor retail there. Under the plan, Dranoff and Gamble agreed to preserve the facade of the theater, which once hosted performances by the likes of Fats Waller and Bessie Smith.

Roskamp said he intends to stick largely to that original proposal, although he plans for-sale townhouses along the Kater Street-facing side of the property, rather than apartments. He hopes to submit an application soon to the city for permission to demolish the theater structure, minus the facade.

Probably because both existing Wawas are zoos at most times of the day right now.

A professional writer splits the infinitive?

You'd be surprised.

Infinitive splitting, like the Oxford comma, is one of those arcane and highly debatable "rules" that you find large camps of the writing community on either side of. Personally, my take on it is that banning infinitive splitting is an attempt to Latinize the language -- unlike in French or Spanish (or even German), we have two-word infinitives, and using a word as an infinitive infix adds more stress to it. Hence "to boldly go" adds more stress on the boldness of the action than "to go boldly". You will also note that we only use adverbs in this infix position -- this is because we are quite literally modifying the verb when we do so.

...is that arcane enough for you?
