^Really wish we could see this type of project replicated elsewhere in the City. Westbank got a major relaxation in height and huge reduction in parking requirements way below standards in return for providing 10% non-market affordable housing.

It was a little easier in the case of 60 W. Cordova as the site is located in the Gastown Historic Area where the zoning and review process is much more flimsy than elsewhere in the City, but hopefully planners are taking note.

I saw a "gentrification tour" going around the DTES a few weeks ago, the weekend before some public market was in front of the Carnegie community centre featuring mostly stolen items, think it was a Wendy Pedersen thing. I missed the opportunity to ask about the gentrification of parking lots.

So the newspaper article on the weekend said that the countertops in the building won't be high end granite but the less expensive Corian. Ummm, since when is Corian cheap??

Well, it's cheaper than granite. Hey this is Vancouver, you couldn't possibly use arborite!

Apparently Corian was originally developed as a material to replace human bones...

from that rendering of 60. W. Pender it seems a little disappointing that they dont have the entire empty space on the street and there will be a tiny empty lot beside.

On another note, Westbank has had a very long long history with Rennie (dating back to at least Residences of Georgia) is there a reason they are using George Wong for their new projects? Have Bob & Ian fallen out?

And similarly, while they used Henriquez in the past (Dockside) most of their work went to James Cheng; it seems all of their new projects are now being by Henriquez. Any particular reason?

Just wondering if anyone here had any insight?

Well, that's not creepy...

And dont'cha know you're practically living in poverty if you don't have stone countertops and exotic wooden floors, with European crafted kitchens, and stainless steel appliances.

This is Vancouver for goodness sake!

They realized Cheng designs horribly bland buildings? Who knows, but I'm not complaining.

Maybe it's more a function of the project than their relationship. Selling to a different group of customers or trying to impress politically. Henriquez is the Woodwards guy. Wong is probably cheaper than Rennie, or will pay more attention to their sales.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but excavation is happening at the vacant lot adjacent to the Roxy. IIRC it will be a two storeys plus mezzanine, for retail use. Definitely better than a dirt lot full of garbage.

Good theory - Henriquez is big in the DTES - He designed Bruce Eriksen Place on Main St.
And maybe Rennie has been dragged down by the Olympic Village fiasco - and is associated with high end projects.
