I agree with this. Take Kitchener-Waterloo (YKF) for instance. WJ runs a daily flight from YYC and back. They experimented with a direct flight to YVR for a bit, but could justify it.

From YKF right now, there are smaller companies (Bearskin) that run frequent flights to YOW, YUL, etc. WJ would be able to attack these markets specifically from YKF considering demand. Now the Q400 wouldn't have range to pick up the YVR flight again, but could serve smaller, localized markets, and even target US destinations (like AA is now doing into YKF).

Anyways, YKF isn't the best example as it is far from a base of operations for WJ (although the flight is full most days), but I do agree with your logic.

Although I do suspect we will see a number of smaller Canadian cities added with the new aircraft I strongly suspect we will also see WestJet add a number of U.S destinations such as Seattle, Boston etc within the Q400's range and requirements (ala Porter)...

Also anyone know why the FedEx A300 diverted to YEG this morning while operating MEM-YYC???

It was very foggy here this am. I'm guessing that is why.

"Abso-fartin'-lutely", as some of my classier coworkers would verbalize. While I grant that inclement weather is a problem at some airports more than others, regardless of whether it's more frequent (and thus worth the investment), when it's in the crapper, it's in the crapper. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. I've no immediate stats to back my claim but YYC weather has been IFR a lot more frequently than in the past, and I'm referring mostly to the 'shoulder' months when low cloud is more prevalent, but it's become so much more common, IMO. Low RVRs, low ceiling, haze, etc. I think it's a very wise decision by the Authority to go ahead and bite the bullet, especially when airlines hub at your airport more than at others. Either way, auto-land in solid IFR weather is a nice thing to have on the big(ger) metal with 140+ pax stuffed into the back with connections to make.

hi, got a question for anyone in the know

are there any plans to expand the arrivals and departure areas for dropping off and picking up passengers? i cant help but think that the arrivals area especially is the worst ive seen. there is no room at all.

The worst area is the transborder / international arrivals section. They need to block off a path for travellers or something. Everytime i pick someone up or travel myself, that area is filled with people greeting eachother. If only there was some courtesy then the "clusterf*ck" would be less significant.

Anyone know the flight range of the AW139 new Stars helicopters compared to the current ones? I am wondering with this greater range, whether a second airport is needed at all and whether a heliport is a better fit.

Looking ahead at winter 2012-2013... looks like Sunwing is going to launch 1 weekly YEG-YYC-CCC on Sundays.

I do not see the Sunwing site stating that the YEG-CCC stops at YYC either coming or going. I certainly hope not. I guess a call will confirm.

This was announced a few weeks ago. The feature is that Sunwing is starting Cayo Coco service from Edmonton, Calgary and Winnipeg.

I have not seen that this flight stops in Calgary; in fact this would be contrary to their recent practice. Notice that there are separate Calgary and Edmonton Santa Clara flights. However, I notice Sunwing is also selling a second weekly Varadero flight this coming winter. Since this is on Sundays, as is the Cayo Coco flight, they may be doubling up these two. I have not seen that they have yet posted flight times or flight numbers.

Charter schedules can change at any time.

Could be crews coming in for Maple Flag. Last time there were British and German aircrews parked in town for the weekend.

Yep pair of Hawk's from CFB Moosejaw. As for Maple flag it is going ahead this year and hopefully we end up with some neat transient visitors (we usually do). I'll put my poker out and find out what if anything is slated to visit YEG during the period.

Sunwing seems to have a lot of issues with flights delays. I noticed through the winter that they would have delays as much as 1 day on some of their flights.

Sort of cuts into your vacation time.
