Eh maybe. I've been a member here for 13 years and I don't think I'll stop coming here. At the same time, I think having the subreddit will bring more people into the conversation, which is a good thing.

I personally don't like Reddit, but it definitely gives an opportunity to expand more, this forum isn't going to get much busier than it is now. But I like that most discussions stay confined to a single thread as opposed to dispersed across a bunch of different topics. Reddit will compartmentalize discussion a lot more.

You mean we can confine the homeless chatter to its own thread?

I have had the desire to set up a Discord channel in the past as another location for posting pictures and having discussions. I have gone out many times and took pictures but once I got home I realized what it takes to post images on this site and decided it wasn't worth the time. As long as my images on Discord don't go over 8MB I can post as many as I want there with a quick drag and drop. Not worrying about doing the Discord channel anymore since I will be moving out of state.

Before anyone gets excited that with my family of 6 moving out will help with the housing issue in the valley I will gladly disappoint you by saying I have been living in my moms' house for the past 3 years.

Does anyone know what the latest is with the big art work project for Regent Street? I remember that they canceled the one artist with the rope lattice thing.

The project was completed and is the most egregious waste of 2 million dollars in the name of public art I’ve ever seen. Whoever selected this project should be fired. Truly blah art. So blah that literally no one is talking about it.

Huh? I hadn't even realized that this had taken place yet? Basically the work covered a side of that parking garage. It's interesting and an improvement, albeit kind of expensive. I admit it will be cool to view it during a breezy day, hopefully next time I'm in Salt Lake.

Deseret News, https://www.deseret.com/utah/2019/10...t-installation

The Pages of Salt installation is comprised of stainless steel rods and 336 Teflon flags that cover the entire north facade of the Walker Center parking garage. Artist Ned Kahn became fascinated with the site’s connection to the printing presses of both the Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News, which were located on Regent Street for over 80 years. The images of hundreds of newspaper pages draped on conveyer belts echo the many identical swaying parts Kahn often utilizes in his wind sculptures. The artwork is intended to suggest a vertical cloud of newspapers swaying in the wind. Managed by the Salt Lake City’s Public Art Program and funded with $2.2 million from the Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City’s major reconstruction of Regent Street, Pages of Salt is the city’s largest investment in a single piece of public art to date. Based in Northern California, Kahn has created over 100 public works in the last 30 years, throughout the country and abroad.

Where it's across the plaza (and loading docks) from Pretty Bird, it's highly visible, and I've probably seen it a dozen times since its installation.

I hate to agree that any public art is a waste of money, because I think it adds so much to a city when it's done well. This particular piece of public art is going to be held up as an example of how "all public art is a waste of money," when it's not.

This is essentially a textured wall of gray cladding a wall of a parking garage that is already a textured wall of gray on every other side. I've seen it in the wind, the rain, the snow, lit, and unlit. It's remarkably unremarkable. The kinetic feature isn't that kinetic; it brings very little to downtown in general, but even less to Regent Street and that little pocket plaza. It's a shame.

A banana taped to a wall has gotten much more attention than this piece of shi... I mean, "art", will ever get.

This really is stupid and anyone who tries to tell me otherwise is lying to themselves.

Yeah, I walked by the Regent St. art back in December and wasn't impressed. It honestly looked like it was already starting to deteriorate.

Nice! 300 w is really shaping up. It will also be nice to get rid of perhaps some of the most dumpy looking apartments in downtown salt lake.

I think murals/street art, funky street furniture, good lighting, & cafes are the best way to activate these places. Check out what Detroit has done:

See what Melbourne has done:

Agreed -- and overall I think the changes to Regent Street have been great. The lighting, other pieces of public art, seating, restaurants...it's all been an improvement. It's more "activated" than I've seen in 20 years.

The changes to the Gateway have also been good, with all of the same amenities you listed above. I was there at the new food hall "Hall Pass" last night, and it was hopping on a Thursday night, and the rest of the Gateway has picked up over the last six months too. Whoever it was that bought it and is putting money into it is making some good moves for the better.
