And that's exactly what it looks like.

I'd be very leery of opening a business downtown that depends on discretionary spending. Inflation has put a lot of consumers living pay cheque to pay cheque. A few years from now when there are large buildings downtown full of potential customers, this type of business will have a better chance of success.

This particular location would be more attractive if the existing RCMP station across the street were replaced with a 15-20 floor residential building and ICON builds their 20 floor tower next to Staples.

L’nu: or L’nuk, is the term the Mi’kmaq use to describe themselves as Indigenous people. It means “the people.” I'd hope it has that more traditional meaning and not the chiac meaning you're referring to

I see that there's a 6 unit apartment building on Atlantic Ave. that has been put on the market this week. Could that mean that the developer Chad Blakney has decided to go with 10 floors on the corner of Main & VH after all? Or had the owner been thinking about selling anyway. The timing leads me to believe that the new development probably influenced the owner to sell his building.

John Wishart, CEO of the GMCC wrote an op-ed in the T&T today strongly (indeed forcefully) in support of 1333 Main.

https://tj.news/times-and-transcript/102076974 (paywall).

He asked the question (as we have already done here), "if you can't build a 10 storey building here, then where can you"?. This of course references the location of this development on the NW corner of Main & Vaughan Harvey. Wishart also dismissed concerns regarding traffic and the effect of shadows on tomato gardens as being of little consequence.

Wishart is well regarded, and his opinions carry weight. I hope the developer reads and rereads his commentary and takes Wishart"s opinion carefully to heart.

It was a great article by John Wishart. He stated that rental vacancy rate in the Moncton CMA is only 1.7% and that Moncton will need 5000 more housing units in the next 3 years to meet demand.

Re. 1333 Main street he said:

"Our Chamber is urging the developers to proceed with their original 10-storey plan."

He even went so far as to say that NIMBYism now threatens the Blakney-Crawford plan.

Kudos to John Wishart. I hope the developers agree with him and build the 10 floor building that Moncton so desperately needs.

It's in the physical newspaper if you can get it. Very interesting and well written article.

Wishart also says that there are several other large scale residential projects in the pipeline, some of which may reach the 20-storey level!

With the population on Moncton (CMA) growing by 8700 people from July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022, we desperately need housing.

Regarding 1333 Main Street, quote: "The part of this development that should not be negotiable is 10 storeys and 162 units."

I strongly agree with him.

I noticed some soil testing going on this morning on the Icon lot beside Staples. Hopefully a sign things are going to start happening on site.

I drove by this evening. It was drilling equipment for soil sampling, but still, this is the most activity we have seen on this lot for years.

Nah, since they haven’t found any gold on Oak Island yet, they’re trying their luck here. History Channel producers will be here next week, along with that annoying announcer who keeps repeating everything in a form of a question.

Any chance we could see a building higher than 20s? something around 23s-26s? It would be nice if the tallest high-rise was a newer building.

Anything is possible, but I'm just pleased as punch that Moncton may see 2-3 new buildings downtown in the 20 storey range.

There have been wild rumours flying around of something as tall as 30 storey, but I don't believe it, and I'm not sure that it would be preferable in any event. I would rather see a cluster of downtown towers in the 15-20 storey rather than another phallus like the NB Tel tower sticking up into the air.

A new tallest would sure be nice but office buildings tend to have higher floors than residential buildings so even with a few new 20-storey buildings, I'm not convinced we will get that.
