I am so happy to see this tower being renovated. And to think, they were going to demolish it, at a time. BTW, where are county offices currently located? Will the move to the new building include courts?

Looks like this area is going to be busy with construction over the next year or so!!!

Heinen's plans downtown Cleveland grocery store, staking out corner of former Ameritrust complex

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Heinen's Fine Foods, a suburban shopping stalwart, plans to step into the city next year with a 33,000-square-foot store in the heart of downtown Cleveland.

The homegrown grocer, led by twin brothers Jeff and Tom Heinen, will occupy a key corner at East Ninth Street and Euclid Avenue. Their store will anchor the northern edge of a huge project -- the transformation of the former Ameritrust complex into a hotel, apartments, offices and Cuyahoga County's new headquarters.

Developer Greg Geis confirmed that he is finalizing a 15-year lease with Heinen's and hopes to open the market, and the rest of the rehabbed complex, in fall 2014. That will make Heinen's downtown's first -- and likely only, in the near term -- major grocer, as the local company bets on continued residential growth in the center city.

Yep.

"The store will fill the first two floors of the historic Rotunda and the first floor of the neighboring Swetland Building, at 1010 Euclid Ave."

Downtown Cleveland's changing face: Fallout from the financial crisis

For downtown Cleveland, the financial crisis ushered in a time of transition. Some transformations turned out better than anyone expected. Other changes, including job-slashing by financial tenants, left city leaders reeling. But five years after the September 2008, a key month in the nation's financial meltdown, downtown Cleveland just might be better off.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The buyer of the former Ameritrust complex has inked a deal with Marriott to bring an Autograph Collection hotel to East Ninth Street, as part of a project that includes 205 apartments, a grocery store, a Euclid Avenue rooftop bar and an indoor dog park.

Developer Greg Geis hopes to wrap up financing deals in November and push for an opening just a year later.

Cleveland - a real gem!

I've always maintained that Cleveland is one of the most under rated cities in the United States. I've lived in the Cleveland area for the better part of 6 years now and I love it here. Its far from a dying city - on the contrary its on quite an upswing.
I remember when I moved to the Cleveland area - specifically Mentor, Oh which is a nice suburb about 20 miles east along the lake, I was coming from San Diego, CA and I was a little more than unsure about it. The girl I was engaged to at that time, who is from Canton, Ohio, was moving back to this area to finish her degree at Cleveland state. I harbored all sorts of misconceptions of the area based on what others had told me - mistake on the lake and so forth.
When I first arrived though I was pleasantly surprised and didnt find the area nearly as bad as what people had led me to believe. When I had a chance to further explore the area and discovered the vast number of things that city and environs had to offer such as downtown - West 6th, W 9th, East 4th and surrounding areas such as Lakewood, Tremont, Ohio city and even downtown Willoughby, which is a suburb about 20 min away with its own little center, I found myself growing quite attached to the area.
I ended up moving back to NY state for a short while after my fiance and I broke it off and I found myself missing this area tremendously - more so that I missed her - hahah
Anyways, I moved back here this past may and bought a house in the Independence area and I'm glad I did. The city seems to be improving itself continuously. We have several key construction projects going on throughout the area such as the ones listed in this thread as well as a new Casino, the Racino.. and so on.
Cleveland is also conveniently located - close to Canada, Chicago, Columbus the wine country up in NY state and so on...
There's tons to do here and its actually an affordable place to live!.. what a novelty!

^That basically describes the three C's. Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati are severely underrated places in this country. I've traveled to so many places around this country and although there are serious issues with Ohio cities, the positives far outweigh the negatives. I love being an Ohioan and telling people all about the great things about this state and its cities whenever I travel and people do the typical, "oh...you're from Ohio, that's too bad" thing. I don't know anyone who has actually moved here for an extended period and thought it was a bad place to live (well, at least in the major city areas. I don't really know about the smaller cities which have less immediate things to do). It's a great place.

Proposed design of Cleveland convention hotel will be unveiled next week

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The first designs for the planned Cleveland Convention Center hotel will be unveiled next week, as Cuyahoga County Council wades through the complexities of a $260 million project meant to boost business at the city's new downtown events complex.

Five months after County Executive Ed FitzGerald announced that the county would put together the development, consultants are putting some meat on the building's bones. Cooper Carry, the Atlanta-based architecture firm designing the hotel, expects to present schematic designs at a Tuesday council meeting. This week, a county consultant provided some basic outlines and financial projections for the project, which will be publicly owned and privately managed by Hilton Worldwide.

It's amazing that just by cleaning the exterior of Ameritrust how nice that building really is. I drove by the site today and I can't believe how fast the new county building has risen. Last time I walked by they had just completed demolishing the site.

Now the Courts Tower of the Justice Center is officially the ugliest building downtown.

What's the status on the Schofield Building? It seems like the project is at a standstill.

I'll be updating the first page, but here's a pic of the Schofield - I'm happy to say it is very much an active work site. Note the repair work toward the top where the scaffolding is. Also, the light beige horizontal bands toward the bottom - I'm pretty sure those are recast from the originals to the building. The contrast between the reddish-orange brick and these accents, well photos don't do it justice:

And contrast that with this photo from 2009 - look at how filthy this building was. No wonder they covered it up with those awful panels, but who'da thunk it would clean up so well?

Cleveland City Council passes Convention Center Hotel financing plan

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland City Council passed legislation Monday authorizing the city to play a role in financing the Cleveland Convention Center Hotel.

Council had planned on tabling the legislation until January, concerned that it did not guarantee adequate parking for guests at the 600-room hotel. The ordinance hit a snag after some members requested that it be amended to promise hotel guests access to a nearby lot.

Consultants and architects in recent weeks presented to council members the renderings for the hotel, which will feature 600 rooms in a 27-story tower above a four-story podium.

The public areas will include a restaurant, a lobby bar and lounge, retail space and, possibly, a green roof on the lower-slung part of the building and some sort of public space atop the hotel. Plans include 55,000 square feet of meeting space.

Cleveland Athletic Club building sells for $4.5 million, preserving tax credits for redevelopment

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- One of the last stagnant properties between downtown Cleveland's Public Square and PlayhouseSquare changed hands on the final day of 2013, indicating that a revival of the empty Cleveland Athletic Club building might happen this year.

A group led by Cleveland Heights investor Ned Weingart and Whitestone Realty Capital LLC of New York bought the building in a $4.5 million transaction, according to real estate records. The sale gave the buyers another shot at keeping valuable state tax credits for historic preservation -- tax credits that the state awarded in 2007, during the first round of a competitive program that became a lifeline for downtown projects during the recession.

Wanted to bump the blog, but also saw there was no post on the new marina:

http://www.cleveland.com/architectur...oast_harb.html

Looks like a nice location. I used to run down around there during lunch and the water there just looked dull and accumulated junk swept in from the waves. Nice to see some activity and use of that area.

Herold Building owner continues demolition quest, revises sketches for downtown Cleveland site

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cleveland City Planning Commission will get a second look this morning at a downtown property owner's plans to demolish a four-story building on Prospect Avenue near East Fourth Street.

The L&R Group of Companies has revised its sketches for a potential development on the site of the Herold Building and a neighboring parking lot. Two weeks ago, L&R's initial designs -- for a single-story retail building topped by digital billboards -- met with strong resistance from a pair of city boards, other property owners and nearby residents.

Thank goodness that the one-story with billboards was squashed. That would replace one eyesore with another on a prime lot.

Not a huge update, but I added some new photo updates for Flats East Bank, the Cleveland Trust/Cuyahoga County complex, the Convention Center Hotel, the Westin and added the marina as a new project.

The Hilton Convention Center Hotel is going to look really nice. The modern glass will serve as a good complement to all of Cleveland's historic buildings.
