I must say, even if it was underutilized, seeing the IOL building (former Dominion Store) on King Square get torn down just as we finally see this new building going up is bittersweet. Just as we fill one lot, another appears.

Yeah, it would be different if it was coming down to make way for a specific project but I haven't heard so much as a whisper. Hope it's not just more surface parking.

Awesome pictures. They finished up placing the floor components yesterday when I walked past to take a picture of the demolition. Those long rectangular components are semi-hollow, with cylindrical voids.

It looked like they were doing some follow-up work today without additional lifts. It would be great if they began the next floor on Monday, so we have a clear timeline for how long it will take.

You can also see the Steepleview Apartments in the background. While there hasn't been much visible change on that site recently, it is progressing, despite its surroundings.

Surely there is some plan for a new building at the old Dominion store site. That's a wonderful opportunity waiting to happen.

So, from starting the installation of the 1st floor walls to capping them with the 2nd story floor they have been about 3.5 weeks.

Let's hope the 1st floor was somehow more time consuming or technically involved then the rest of the assembly will be. Otherwise, it's a July/August date for panel assembly to be done. I can't imagine that's correct

I've heard Percy Wilber was saying 13 back in the early summer. ( 12 full floors plus a smaller sq footage penthouse) I suspect that is counting from the main entrance on King.....so one less on Charlotte.

The rendering in the Strescon article would seem to confirm that.

Do we have a rough estimate on the height in meters yet? Would 12+ suffice, or should we wait to get confirmation on if it's going to be 13?


I say if we can get a semi accurate estimate for the height of the building, one of us should go ahead and bug a mod to update the title.


I think I remember it being stated in this thread that 12 storeys was about the limit for this type of prefab construction... so I doubt it will be 15+ storeys, as nice as that would be.

That could be quite interesting, especially if there was a pedway connecting the buildings.

I'd say they should go even further than a mere corporate campus, as they could incorporate that office space into a mixed use development.

JDI is the largest construction company in Atlantic Canada... the city and province could push them to do more in addressing the need for housing in Uptown Saint John, even if it's not affordable housing.

I would think Lindsay Construction is largest maritime based construction company. PCL would be largest in Maritimes although not based here. I didn’t even know JDI had a construction company. Closest thing to Irving would be OSCO’s group of companies like KCS and MQ.

Obviously, construction certainly isn't the only thing JDI does, but as a conglomerate is there another corporation or conglomerate in the maritimes larger than JDI, or Irving Oil?
