Thats interesting, on the Cities development portal it still says its been revised to a 6-story Building

I saw something in, reddit I think? that said there were a lot of buildings in the Sahali area that were "sinking"?

Haven't heard too much other than a couple businesses closed in the Landmark Centre complex and they are working on stabilizing it.

That whole area (Superstore , Landmark center, etc.) was built on top of a landfill so its not unexpected to have some settlement issues.

Ya, I think that 16 storey proposal is dead unfortunately. I thought it looked great too. Hopefully they get the same firm to design the 6 storey because their work looks really nice. I'd be happy if they end up just keeping this podium and put the same 6 stories on top.

Indeed, the area is built on top of the former city dump. Those T and J shaped vents are somewhat to deal with gas buildup.
I can remember over the last 20 years the Superstore has needed to dismantle and rebuild the retaining wall on the North side. When Art Knapp was where Winners is now there was some wicked depressions that formed in the parking lot after it was paved. When Landmark was being built they dug down and into the landfill and relocated a notable amount of trash, presumably to cut through to something more stable to build on. They also put in a ton of pilings.

Before everything but the Superstore I remember there was some sort of amusement park and Go-kart track that sat on top of it. Lightweight structures that were less prone to settling issues.

Interesting info on the Peterson Creek Development. Unfortunately looks like BC Housing wants to do a bunch of 6 storey buildings

Kind of wish they put more thought into their designs, it looks like they placed a big box and made three more copies side by side. Like Rhino also mentioned, It would have been a good location where high rises could have been.

The Build Kamloops project seems to be moving ahead quickly. How do you think it will shake out. Tie the PAC and four sheets of ice together in one referendum? This would get the vote out from the hockey community.

Its amazing if you look on Twitter just HOW MANY nay sayers there are in Kamloops. Reading peoples comments on there shows the worst of our population that spew nothing but hate for anything new coming here. There are still people on there mad as hell about City Gardens being built and demanding they halt construction. The same people are apposed to the build Kamloops plan and want NOTHING to do with the PAC. IF it were up to a small minority in this city, wed go back to dirt roads. These people need to move to Barrier.

I don't understand how Kamloops and Kelowna are approving and building high rise buildings and Naniamo hasn't built one in 30 years except the 9 story Marriott hotel.So strange.

Well, Kelowna is double the size of Nanaimo, so there is that, and Nanaimo by far has the most room to sprawl of the three (Kelowna via the lakes, ALR, and mountains, and Kamloops via the mountains, rivers, and lakes are far more restrained) and also I believe at least Kelowna is growing much faster than Nanaimo.

With all that said, you still think they would have one or two tower projects in the works.

I know Nanaimo is really cursed when it comes to taller projects actually making it to construction.

I've wondered that same thing about Nanaimo and I think what Metro said is the main reason why. There just isn't any land left in both Kamloops and Kelowna due to topography. I think Kamloops is sitting around 2% of available land left to develop. For developers to keep the lights on they're going to have to infill.

Another reason for Nanaimo I would think is the politics there. From what I see as an outsider is that Nanaimo's downtown has been given over to addicts. Why would a developer want to invest in that?

Call me crazy but I don't hate this. I think the size fits in good tucked away up the ravine, and the location of the trail right beside Peterson Creek is done right. I feel like this rendering is for massing only and the final buildings will look completely different. Will be interesting to see what they look like. Size, number and location of buildings will be the same. Now if they put something like this on the site further North on Columbia street, then that would suck.

Totally agree, so frustrating. Those people are the worst! My hope is that them including sport facilities - ice rinks, North Shore pool, curling club, indoor field, community centre and the potential of housing above the facilities will bring out more people in favor for the referendum.

I haven't spoken to many people in person who are apposed to these projects. Frankly there are a few groups that are apposed to these projects. Retired folks who WONT use them and don't like change and those who don't really have much of an income . What I mean by this is those who are unemployed and on welfare and DONT pay taxes already. They often talk about putting that money into " social programs " instead, which shows their motivation. They want more free stuff for THEM. They really don't care about the people who actually pay for things.
