It seems weird now being able to see the Westgate Tower and 816 Congress back there then. And I miss seeing the One American Center tower over stuff.

From that shot, the JW plays a significant role in the skyline. There is a cluster of four buildings including the JW that are about the same height. Have to admit, the skyline is looking impressive, but thank God for the Austonian, otherwise it would look flat. From many different angles, its like the peak of a mountain.

10 years ago... it really does feel like it just happened.

The fall of that year my dad and I had a bit of an argument and he sorta kicked me out. I was 20 back then. We lived in Del Valle and I had not really explored much of Austin... didn't really know my way around so I took the car and drove around quite a bit. I parked on the drag and walked into the Dobie theater. It was when they had their late screenings... or at least that night they did. It was a Sunday night. One of those warms December days. I checked out "The Machinist" with Christian Bale. The girl working said it was a good choice for a dark film. I was waiting for the film to start and I was in the Dobie by myself. "Spies" by Coldplay played before the previews. The setting, the mood, the memory, everything is all just too perfect. It's paradoxically a beautifully dark memory.

Was that the beginning of your interest in film making or did it start before that?

It started way before that. I was 13 when I first watched Se7en. Obviously a kid that age is going to be affected by it somehow.... so I wrote my first idea for a movie right after it. We lived in Arlington, TX at that time. It was about a detective who has to find the 8th witness to a murder before the last witness gets killed. Not too shabby for a kid that age, but you see the influences of Se7en spilling over.

Oh and I also watched Goodfellas at age 9. That also influenced my interests a great deal.

From today's statesman... Before and after shots of the Austin skyline.

http://www.mystatesman.com/interacti.../then-and-now/

This one is the most dramatic; 1997 and 2012

The 1997 view is essentially what it looked like when I moved here in 2000. Oh what the changes I've seen!

Beautiful photo. For comparison, here is the view from when the Pfluger bridge was first completed, in 2001. Not even the Austin City Lofts were built at the time, and you can see Dobie. Not sure if the cranes on the right are for the Travis County building (Blackwell Thurman Justice center). The close one on the left was for the bridge, I think (although it looks open -- you can see a couple of people). The other one on the left in the distant background, not sure. Maybe the Nokonah?
