Yeah, we're really a city on the verge of great things and an outstanding reputation!

Actually, I made an edit to my post which must have been shortly after you picked it up. I added a sentence, it's in bold:

I know some on here try to portray Winnipeg as the next great Metrosexual Paradise, but as a lifelong resident, I can say that this is a view held by very few in this city. The subconscious reason for their naiveté and rapid-fire excuse-making is that it provides the convenience to ignore the root causes, which is all part-in-parcel with the desire to impress those who do not live here.

Now that the snow has been around for a few months, it's quite easy to spot bloodstains around downtown. It's unfortunate, but true. Yeah, we're really a city on the verge of an outstanding reputation!

Though I’m not a regular “poster,” I do look forward to the debate we are bound to have in the Canada section on occasion. The way I see it, it is me who is providing the counter-balance.

‘Till next time!

What you wrote only adds fuel to the fire, and does nothing to express your concerns in a coherent and professional manner; you just ranted like some bitter person. If you are that concern about your safety, then may I suggest a move to Calgary so you can act like a typical Calgarian ( you sound like you would fit right in )and bash Winnipeg to your hearts content.

Well maybe .. but Calgary has its own murder problems.

Except in Calgary innocent bistandards are the ones getting killed.

As my whole the saying is "Don't Fuck with Winnipegers they'll kill you". Thus far it seems to keep people off my back when I say I am from Winnipeg.

The latest homicide is the result of a domestic incident between people with addiction issues. Hardly something the general public should be really concerned about - with respect to their own personal safety, that is. Unless of course you, too, are a crack addicted, insecure person who continually ends up making poor personal choices.

Why someone feels the need to 'warn' others about these types of crimes, who knows!

Most murders are domestic disputes. You're more likely to be killed by someone close to you than by someone you've never met. There have been a lot of murders in my neighbourhood but I still feel safe, because I don't do drugs, drink, or have an abusive boyfriend.

Boyfriend charged after woman’s fatal fall
The Chronicle-Journal | February 2, 2009
http://www.chroniclejournal.com/stor....php?id=162012

The boyfriend of a woman who died after falling from an 11-storey window in Winnipeg on Friday has been charged in connection to the death.
Alinda Meeri Lahteenmaki, 23, who was born and raised in Thunder Bay, fell from the window of an apartment building in Winnipeg‘s downtown area early Friday morning.
Her boyfriend, 41-year-old Mario Trunzo has been charged with second-degree murder.
According to information from the Winnipeg Police Service, officers arrived at the area of Assiniboine Avenue and Hargrave Street at about 4 a.m. to look into a call received about an injured female.
Lahteenmaki was sent to hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to her injuries.
The Winnipeg Police Service homicide unit are investigating the incident. Trunzo remains in custody.
Friends of the victim have set up a Facebook group in honour of Lahteenmaki. More than 100 people have joined to share memories and lend support to her family.

FYI, a new version of Google Earth (5.0) was released today (no new imagery for Winnipeg). There is a fun new little feature that lets you use a slider button to cycle through previous imagery for any location (if available).

For Winnipeg, this means you can go back through five or six sets of images to 2002. Useful to track development sites. You can go back and see the Eatons Building, for instance.

(You can also fly under the water in the oceans to see the sea floor)

After going over the new version, the "latest" images of Winnipeg is actually dated than the last image of April 18, 2007, where it shows the construction of the new terminal at the airport, rather than not showing any activity but the parkade being built there with the "latest" image.

Barbecue to be held while school demolished

By: Staff Writer | Winnipeg Free Press

It’s not every day that the community throws a barbecue while watching a school get demolished.

The long-closed Krawchyk School at 1950 Pacific Ave. will be knocked down at 11 a.m. on Friday, while neighbouring Brooklands School hosts a barbecue, St. James-Assiniboia School Division said today.

The entire community is invited to come to watch this historic ceremony, say good-bye to the old school and join current and former students for a Red Brick Knock Down Barbeque, division officials said.

One of the Brooklands School students will have the opportunity to sit in the crane with the operator and take the ceremonial first strike of the old school building.

Built in 1911, Krawchyk School originally consisted of 10 classrooms, which served grades one to three, as well as a nursery school and a kindergarten.

Brooklands School, originally called Butterworth School, was built adjacent to Krawchyk School on the same property.

I guess this is preparing them for their future careers as city planners.

I'm not familiar with this part of town.

But I do wonder what this school looks like? I find schools built in that era to be a lot more aesthetically pleasing than the types of schools we build today.

John Pritchard, Laura Secord, Isaac Brock, and Luxton all come to mind in this regard.

I'm sure this school isn't nearly as grande as any of those, but the worksmanship and building materials are probably of a far higher calibre than anything built in the last 50 years.

My experience has been that by the time we start talking demolition, the lawyers are getting involved (insert smileyface).

I'm sure you feel suitably awestruck in their superhuman presence.

I used to, until i went to a Christmas party for one of the larger local firms here in town. I was awestruck, but not in a positive sense.

There is a local lawyer who makes the news sometimes and every time my mom sees him she says "Pfft, cokehead".

Is that what you are talking about?

House To Change Future

CJOB's Lorne Edwards reporting
2/5/2009

You can huff and puff, but you won't be able to blow this house down, or even burn it for that matter.

The President of Storm Builders and Distributors Derek Cook who's previewing the home in Winnipeg says this building is very special:

Cook who's originally from the Bloodvein First Nation says the house could change the future for northern communities. He says an Ambiente Housing System home doesn't burn, harbour mould, or corrode. It also withstands severe weather.

You can see it this weekend behind the Superstore at Lee Boulevard and Barnes in Fort Richmond.
