Porter is a great operator--and I'm thrilled to see them (apparently) doing well. Deluce's pockets are deep and they have Don Carty steering the ship--and if you can run an operation the size of AA, I trust you to run something the size of Porter.

That being said--Porter has survived because it managed to do something different. It hasn't engaged in suicide pricing--and it's been able to do so mainly on the basis that it's at City Centre Airport--which it has to itself. If Porter were at YYZ, it would be eaten alive in the way Intair, VistaJet, Astoria, Nationair and everyone else that had the brass balls to attempt to get a piece of AC's action in the "triangle". AC will tolerate one competitor, as it did with Canadian--and now WestJet--but it's not going to let anyone else in to its lunch. Frankly if I see Porter in Hamilton it will disappoint me--not because I don't want to see someone else on those key routes--but because it will mean Porter is drifting off course as far as it's business-plan--and that's never a good sign. If WestJet added a couple of flights a day back on the YOW and YUL routes, I'd be ecstatic. The problem of course is that these are frequency-sensitive routes...time will tell.

Great shots LikeHamilton--incredible to see all that iron on the ramp--its been a long time coming.

Work begins on Cargojet hangar expansion

August 14, 2008
The Hamilton Spectator

Construction has started on the $9-million expansion of a major hangar at Hamilton airport.

Cargojet is expanding its maintenance hangar to 65,000 square feet -- with 12,000 square feet for its shop, office and parts warehouse areas, as well as 75,000 square feet for an apron area.

The new facility will accommodate a Boeing 767-200 and a Boeing 757-200 aircraft simultaneously and will provide apron parking for up to three widebody and narrowbody aircraft.

"We are very excited with the investment and expansion of our maintenance hangar facilities at Hamilton airport. This will provide our new aircraft with a proper maintenance base, create additional employment opportunities and is another milestone in Cargojet's continued growth," said company president Ajay Virmani.

Cargojet moves more than 400,000 kilograms of air cargo each business night with a fleet of 34 aircraft.

I can't see them setting up in Hamilton at a discount airport.
Forget about cool or trendy or discount --- it's not about those things. Porter is all about the Toronto City Centre Airport. A move into Hamilton would not play to its competitive advantage at all.

Look for more art at the airport when you welcome your friends and relatives.

Photos of Hamilton's treasures -- the escarpment, its water falls and the Bruce Trail -- are hanging in the new international arrivals hall at John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport.

Designer Viola Mueller, of Design Smarts, and Allyson Wenzowski, of Publicity Works in Dundas, created the display, courtesy of the Hamilton Conservation Authority.

It's part of Sense of Place, a concept that Vancouver Airport Services developed for the 18 airports it manages around the world.

Inspiration for the escarpment theme came from former City of Hamilton (Ancaster) councillor Murray Ferguson.

Richard Koroscil, airport CEO, says it's a celebration of the amazing things in this area.

"We get so many Europeans who love to hike the trails.

"We are partnering with the Bruce Trail to create finishes inside that represent the trail and escarpment," he says.

A gift shop selling local arts and crafts is planned and more local art and photography will be installed in the international arrivals hall.

Hahahaha...I really need to dig up my old post where I suggest that the airport partner with the RBG, Bruce Trail, NEC, etc, to play up the natural landscape...hell...I'm thrilled they drew the same conclusion--as anyone who's been to YVR knows, they know how to put together a beautiful, locally-focused Terminal with the insane costs associated with anything the GTAA touches.

Awesome! I've long been a proponent of this idea too.
I just hope they don't do anything too dramatic too soon...I want to see that crappy terminal demolished and replaced with a real airport terminal. They'd be better to save the more spectacular installations until the new airport is built.

So far that' a fairly light schedule--looks like one daily roundtrip at this point--but the schedule is fluid at this point--considering the success they've had at YHM I'm sure they'll add additional capacity if and when they can secure additional aircraft--as they did in the S07 season.

On a related note, it appears as of today that Zoom is toast. As of noon there were aircraft grounded in Halifax and Calgary and passengers stranded in Ottawa and London. HQ in Ottawa told CBC that a statement would come later today...certainly hate to see it happen, but it does take capacity out of the Trans-Atlantic and Sun markets...something that's ultimately good for the remaining players in the long-run.

This actually represents an increase to flyglobespan's Summer 2008 flights into YHM, from six weekly flights this year to daily flights to the UK in 2009. From what I understand, this isn't flyglobespan's complete Summer 2009. We may see a couple more weekly visits once they have figured out the 767 schedule for YVR and YCC. Once I get flyglobespan's official Summer 2009 schedule I'll be sure to pass it along.

Yes...assuming they are unsuccessful with CCAA in Canada and the insolvency process in the UK--the fleet should be in play - the total being 3 757s and 5 767s - a few registered in the UK and the rest registered in Canada.
