I was just a kid in the 80s and didnt live in the north end. Does anyone know which mall was better (Sherwood Village Mall or Normanview Shoppin Centre) in terms of more stores, better stores, better food court, busier?

I know the answers can be rather subjective.

They were both kind of dumps but Sherwood was newer and had more of a "mall" feel with a food court and things. Normanview always felt like a strip mall with a bit of indoor mall added on. Before Zellers opened up at Normanview it really was just a strip mall with a bit of indoor mall on one end.

Bumping an old thread. Hoping someone in here can help with this question. Does anyone know why the area around the Cathy L. dog park has so many vacant lots in it? Any history or background information would be appreciated. Thanks.

I might be totally wrong on this (second-hand info), but I believe the city no longer allows any development in that area. So current owners can stay, but if a house is torn down, nothing can be rebuilt in its place. I'm not sure why (future development of Lewvan/Sask Dr interchange, perhaps?).

The west side of it is in the Floodway for the creek, and is undevelopable for new homes. There is also a main trunk sewer line that runs on an angle through cathedral, cpr annex, pioneer village,rosemont and mount royal to the Mcarthy pumping station that limits construction. Some neighborhoods are designed around it, it runs under empress drive. So if you follow that angle in each direction, you can really see where it runs by how buildings are built around, and are angled to not be on the easement. There are two newer houses on pasqua street between 14th and 15th that are angled to allow the main trunk. If my memory is correct, I think it's nearly 10' in diameter.

You are right, those houses are in the Floodway overlay zone, and would be prone to flooding in a major event, so they could not be rebuilt if there was an issue. They are mostly on the west part of CPR Annex, but the floodway is elevation based, so you would have to look at the overlay zone map to see exactly where.
