I was just a kid in the 80s and didnt live in the north end. Does anyone know which mall was better (Sherwood Village Mall or Normanview Shoppin Centre) in terms of more stores, better stores, better food court, busier?

I know the answers can be rather subjective.

They were both kind of dumps but Sherwood was newer and had more of a "mall" feel with a food court and things. Normanview always felt like a strip mall with a bit of indoor mall added on. Before Zellers opened up at Normanview it really was just a strip mall with a bit of indoor mall on one end.

Smile New "Experience Regina" tourism board

Recently, thanks to another blunder by council, there have been many vocal haters of our City of Regina coming out of the woodwork. They perpetuate stereotypes and accentuate the negative forgetting all about who we are as a people. I made this short video to remind them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IZqNhn3Dqg

Bumping an old thread. Hoping someone in here can help with this question. Does anyone know why the area around the Cathy L. dog park has so many vacant lots in it? Any history or background information would be appreciated. Thanks.

I might be totally wrong on this (second-hand info), but I believe the city no longer allows any development in that area. So current owners can stay, but if a house is torn down, nothing can be rebuilt in its place. I'm not sure why (future development of Lewvan/Sask Dr interchange, perhaps?).

The west side of it is in the Floodway for the creek, and is undevelopable for new homes. There is also a main trunk sewer line that runs on an angle through cathedral, cpr annex, pioneer village, rosemont and mount royal to the Mcarthy pumping station that limits construction. Some neighborhoods are designed around it, it runs under empress drive. So if you follow that angle in each direction, you can really see where it runs by how buildings are built around, and are angled to not be on the easement. There are two newer houses on pasqua street between 14th and 15th that are angled to allow the main trunk. If my memory is correct, I think it's nearly 10' in diameter.

You are right, those houses are in the Floodway overlay zone, and would be prone to flooding in a major event, so they could not be rebuilt if there was an issue. They are mostly on the west part of CPR Annex, but the floodway is elevation based, so you would have to look at the overlay zone map to see exactly where.

I remember The Factory (and the endless names changes in its last few years of survival) AND i remember before it was the Factory it was at one time an underage club called ROCK CITY and before that it was also a bar but I cant remember the name as I wasn't old enough but for some reason i have the name Studio 54 or something like that in my head but I'm probably wrong

I remember the old Gabbos in the basement of the old Presutti's Tomatoes across from the SGI tower.

I remember when Soho's used to be called Manhattans (its never been the same again) and you could wait in line downstairs inside and have a drink and play pool before getting in upstairs AND that you could ply beach volleyball in their backyard and watch games from the 2nd floor deck wich was later deemed UNSAFE before it changed names to NEW YORX and the SOHO's

and lastly I remember Lauderdales inside the Regina Inn!

Before it was Lauderdales, it was Ruffles. In the mid 80's Delberts and Ruffles were THE places to be. Totally rockin' dance clubs. The Keg was beside Delberts back when the Keg was relatively affordable and the steaks were HUGE (Keg sized!). Checkers was for the university crowd and alternative music - all brains, no rhythm. There was another one on north Albert (I think) that was huge with two levels. Saw Trooper play there. Saw Colin James every night for a week at Delberts just before he hit the big time.

Roxy (wasn't it actually called the Odeon Roxy) - closed about '77.
Broadway and the Metropolitan - closed about '81.
Odeon Center in Regina Inn - guessing here...closed '85ish???
Capitol - closed about '92. It converted from a single to a twin at some point in the 70's I think.
That leaves the modern downtown theatres:
Coronet (6) - closed about '03.
Cornwall (4)- closed about '04.
Did I mention that I'm really digging this thread?!?

The Met Theatre and the Capital were very beautiful theatres. They should have been saved as heritage buildings. It was weird when they split the Capital as the giant circle on ceiling became two half circles in each one. The Broadway was across the street and down a block from the Met. I saw Earthquake at the Odeon Centre below the Regina Inn when there was a spiral driveway leading down to the underground parking. Saw Jaws at the Coronet.
