These are amazing developments on the beltline, and only going to be more, probably too much, imo.

Over-development in the NE segment, absolutely nothing happening elsewhere. Another beef: some construction is substandard quality.

I'm in total agreement here.

Gotta start somewhere. I volunteered on the Beltline twice, and ran on it a few times and had the opposite thoughts - I came away very impressed.

Not accurate: walked the newest SW portion last Sunday and there has been substantial progress there. While the majority of the ancillary development is along the Eastside portion, the Beltline itself is progressing physically into the South and Southeast corridors.

At the latest Beltline meeting last week they said the Eastide trail construction on the extension through Reynoldstown to Glenwood Park would begin within 12 month. Just wait till you see the development that will begin in this area as well! I encourage you all to go to these meetings when they are in your area. Check the Beltline website for locations on these dates.

• Northside Study Group: Monday, April 1

All the way to Glenwood Park Chris? Wylie St and Bill Kennedy Way Beltline improvements starting within 12 months?

Agreed. IMHO, it's cutting through barriers that separate neighborhoods.

Not sure you can force builders to build townhouses in depressed areas.

From Wylie St. to just Memorial. I think that the improvements on Bill Kennedy through Glenwood park will come later and depend on what is going on with the Faqua development there and if Faqua is going to still offer to build part of the trail in Glenwood Park.

They also expect to start construction of the connection of the Eastside trail to Fourth Ward Park within 12 months as well.

Now if I were a betting man I bet it would be more towards the end of the 12 months than sooner.

OK that's what I suspected. They probably need to nail down whatever is going to happen west of Glenwood Park before they cross over I-20. I'll try to make it to the next meeting.

New 150k Tower for Buckhead?

Late last year, CRIF Lending Solutions purchased a little over an acre off Peachtree Street, directly behind the under-development TD Ameritrade building for $6M. The parcel was owned in a JV of Pope & Land Enterprises and Regent Partners. In its place, sources tell (Bisnow) CRIF intends to develop an estimated 150k SF tower that will partially be used for its own domestic offices. CRIF's Lisa Eikhoff declined to comment except to say "we're still in the planning process and really haven't moved too far down that path yet.

Atlanta to host TomorrowWorld

Quote:
Popular Belgian music festival Tomorrowland will make its American debut in Atlanta.
Festival promoters announced late Wednesday the U.S. version will be called TomorrowWorld and will be at Bouckaert Farm, about 30 miles south of Atlanta, Sept. 27-29.

Tomorrowland gets attendees from more than 76 countries and last year tickets sold out three months in advance in under 2 seconds. TomorrowWorld is expected to bring 150,000 visitors to Atlanta.

Festival organizers have put together Global Journey travel packages to Atlanta from 35 cities around the world, such as Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, Rio De Janeiro and London.
Worldwide ticket sales begin on May 4.

A huge win for Atlanta.

Brock is nearly built out at Dupont Commons, so the next logical intown site to build on would be the one they already own at West Town. The only question would be A&D financing because that's still very difficult to obtain for most homebuilding firms. They partnered with a deep pocketed suburban developer named the Pacific Group to help provide the liquidity necessary to get through the housing downturn without losing all their existing projects to the banks, so maybe those guys would team up again on West Town and negate the issue of A&D financing.

Also, AMLI still owns their West Town parcels and Acadia Homes has assembled a block directly adjacent to the West Town property on Fairmont Ave, so it probably won't be too long before that West Town dream comes to fruition.

i'm really disappointed by all the low-rise development, but not because i don't think it's *dense* enough— it's because the development i've seen so far doesn't seem to be sustainable. what do i mean by sustainable? i mean, in 20 years, are people going to want to live there? will it be livable?

the building codes for high rises are much more strict and you can see when the buildings are going up, that they are solid— iron bars, concrete, a solid base. you're guaranteed that a building like skyhouse is going to be prime real estate 20 years from now.

the low rise development doesn't have to meet the same building standards because it isn't as tall— and developers are cutting corners anyway they can to make the most cost-efficient building. unfortunately that means the whole thing is going to be made out of plywood, drywall, pressure-treated wood, etc. those buildings are great now, but what are they going to look like 20 or 30 years from now after they've had dozens of occupants per room? my guess is that many of these low-rise developments will look like this within 50 years:

so i guess you can see my problem here. i'm worried that all this low-rise development in town will be for naught, because we'll just be building 'the slums of tomorrow'. do y'all really believe that these buildings are built to a quality that they will last?

Very little is built to last these days; even most high rises have a cheap look and quality to them. Obsolescence is built in.
