Well, after weeks of continuous lurking, I've decided to come back with a simple question... What Has Changed Since I Left? (I left about 9/20)

Glad to see that some of the grass at Zilker park is green and growing again.

We need a large building that ins't blue.

Between 360, Frost and Austonian our downtown is looking overly blue.

How times have changed. I remember when we wished that someday any type of tall building could be built. Now we are picking out colors.

I'll take anything at all. I'm just saying another color would be nice is all.

Although, I'm noticing blue/light cladding seems to be all the rage in general for the last few years. So it's likely a function of Austin's boom happening at this point in time than anything else.

Sort of like how Austin was suck in the mid 80's for two decades.

Exactly. I personally am very happy we've ditched the "brown" skyline of the 80's. I'll take the blue buildings, as many as they want to build

It d be cool to see a 800 feet burnt orange skyscraper in middle of Austin's skyline!! I recall Chicago has one red supertall building. I am not sure what name of this building and I believe it is in 700's feet tall..

So I took a sunny Saturday afternoon drive along the periphery of the city yesterday (10/31). the Austonian, and its surroundings, were the star attraction of my camera lens(es). The tower looks impressive no matter how near or far...

This is from Elgin, approx 22 miles NE of downtown Austin. The city's three tallest were visible; Austonian, Frost and 360.

Just to the right of downtown, I spotted the Palisades office building, approx 26 miles away, from this same spot.



Also around 20 miles away, I spotted the Austonian from Hays County, on a stretch of road between Kyle and Buda (no pictures unfortunately).

Wow what great pictures. It is hard to imagine but Austin basically has an entire new skyline within downtown. Some of those pictures really show that for sure.

I know, right? This picture especially... of all the highrises pictured, only one was in existence less than 3 years ago. Amazing.

Great pictures. I can't believe you can see downtown from that far out. That's pretty amazing. And Palisades West at 26 miles! That would pretty much be like spotting a building in San Marcos from Central Austin.

It's called CNA Plaza. It's only 601 feet tall though. Not exactly a supertall, but it's definitely red. haha It's always been one of my favorites in Chicago. There aren't exactly a lot of red skyscrapers around.

There's also that black and yellow building that recently went up in NYC. It got a lot of hate on the forums, but I kinda dug it.

Well 2, the RBJ Tower was built in 1971 I believe. It's 155 feet tall. Still, among the tallest ones there, yeah, One Congress Plaza was the only one that existed before 2006. I'm loving those views. There's some unique angles on the skyline there.

I like the idea of separating the identity of downtown from the campus of UT. They both are Austin but stand for 2 distincly different lifestyles. The campus reflects the education and tradition of our truely special univercity. The down town reflects what happens apon growing up after graduation. Also the economic strengh of a stable economy. Man my spelling stinks.

yeah and to think Riverside was intended to be an expressway back during Austin's road planning of yesteryear. imagine: a downtown east/west high speed corridor. the "Riverside Freeway". has a nice ring to it, but will never happen now. too much development on either side. i guess it could go underground and be a tunnel, but those suck. no views.

Sooooo glad most of those freeway plans from the early 60's never happened.
