What is missing from the pole in the foreground? The street light. A man apparently committed suicide on the 19th of January. He landed in the bike lane. (The link for the picture shows the light fixture on the sidewalk. Don't worry as I have self censored the photo!) On the way down his body hit the light pole taking down the whole fixture. This is the 10th suicide by someone falling from the Fox Plaza that I am aware of in the 44 years of my residence.

The signage on the pole is upside-down. Crazy times we live in.

It always saddens me deeply to hear of suicide.

SFBARF turned out in numbers for the Balboa Reservoir meeting tonight, wearing stickers and handing out flyers showing this proposal, with towers up to 56 storeys:

fimiak - The banner was dislodged and turned upside down when the street light was torn from it's mooring - you can see the rusty area where the top of the banner was affixed.

Nice to see 1321 and 1400 Mission from your perspective. Nice pics.

The Market is now open in the "Twitter Building"!

Reminds me of the greatly exaggerated scare tactics of the group fighting the 1481 Post Street tower--same scenario, different location!

Uh, BARF is *for* that proposal. See their website: sfbarf.org

Two of them were in our break out group and seemed quite sincere. One of them was Starchild. I'd heard the name before (did he run for mayor?) and assumed he might be of the radical faerie persuasion, but he turned out to be a Hayek-quoting doctrinaire libertarian.

Unless of course it's all performance theater.

It's unbelievable how much that intersection has been transformed in such a short time. I distinctly remember having breakfast at Little Griddle across the street (not so long ago) and looking out over dirt lot that is now NEMA and a Twitter building that was then a boarded-up hulk. Now we've got Twitter and a gourmet grocery in there (with more restaurants to follow) plus 1400 Mission and many other projects nearby. An amazing urban renewal success story!

By the way, walking by the other day I noticed that at least one of the Fox Plaza retail spaces had been vacated, does this mean the Fox Plaza expansion is imminent? I'll bet Jerry would know...

It's nice to see pro-development people get organized, but that name is kind of unfortunate. SF...BARF? It's like a NIMBY joke.

"Yep Bob, those pro-development people sure are fans of barf aren't they! At least they're honest! hurr hurr hurr barf hahahoho dumb highrise buildings."

I wonder if Salma loves all the development on Rincon Hill as much as I do?

Why would they scare the neighborhood with skyscraper renderings? The vast majority of people there would not want towers up to 56 floors. That, along with their acronym, means they will never be taken seriously--they'll embolden the NIMBYs and set back the cause and case for a drastic increase in housing units in the City.

Maybe they're agent provocateurs sent by the NIMBYs, to make increased development and its supporters look bad to people who are on the fence about whether more development is good or not.

...uhh Gotta get my tinfoil hat.

Fox Plaza Extension

BushMan - I have not heard of any plans to extend the Fox Plaza. Keep in mind that the Fox Plaza is split in two between the apartment section (Essex) & the business section - I find it bizarre that there are 2 different owner! I suspect Patrick's office supply did not have the business to justify the space.

I have lived in the Fox Plaza for 44 years & am happy to see what used to be a desert at night be a much more vibrant area. I am very happy to have all of the new highrise buildings in the area, but I don't find all of them attractive though. I visited The Market today. I am not sure how many times I will visit as it is expensive. For sure my favorite champagne is $6 more expensive than Safeway which is an easy walk or streetcar ride.

Thanks for the response, Jerry!

This is the project I was referring to:

http://www.socketsite.com/archives/2013/...titlements_to_expand_have_been_sold.html

I've heard about this on and off for a long time now, I was hopeful that maybe it's finally starting to happen.

I also don't find all of the new buildings in the area attractive. I think Argenta was pretty awful although much better when viewed from Market Street than from the Civic Center area. While I agree with others that NEMA looks sloppy from a distance with all that junk showing on the roof I think it looks sleek and beautiful up close.

I'm with you regarding the over-priced Market at Twitter. I will NEVER shop there but I'm still thrilled to see it open because of the additional life it will bring to the area.
