Some fans of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's take on international style might disagree with you on that one. I Love La Tour CIBC as well but I don't even think it's Montreal's best example of international style.

Its a good angle because it minimizes the gaps and looks like a continuous wall of skyscrapers... but there are a couple of better angle's I've seen.

Is Montreal starting to punch its weight in new construction?

Yes finally. I wish they would build more interesting towers though.

While I agree Tour des Canadiens and Roccabella are bland, L'Icone and L'Avenue have nice designs.

What I'd like is for our skyline to modernize. Sure there are glass projects like Deloitte, Roccabella, Icone etc but there are still lots of prefab projects going up... Hopefully 750 Peel gets built, this would be a new signature tower IMO.

I agree but I don't want too much glass or else it will look like Vancouver or Southcore (Toronto). I prefer the variety it (and the rest of downtown Toronto) has.

I really like that angle because of the continuous wall of skyscrapers. I know there are other angles, but I think this one might be my favorite. A major city skyline should have no gaps.

I just realized something the other day... how well protected are Vancouver's many glass towers from the inevitable Cascadia megathrust earthquake?

What I've heard is that they should be able to stay up, however they'll be damaged beyond repair and will have to be torn down. Not 100% sure of the accuracy of that though.

The 'big one' has long been expected, towers are built with that in mind. The glass towers will not be the major issue, it is older buildings that are at risk. Just look at Japan to see how new construction holds in a major earthquake.

In that case, Vancouver is lucky as it's a relatively young city.

If I'm not mistaken, Vancouver's sheltered position on the ocean coast should also spare it the full brunt of any earthquake-induced tsunami.

Yep. I vaguely knew about the threat but didn't realize it was that bad.

What I meant is, the floorplates of the CIBC Tower are really small compared to today's office towers. Which is why they don't make them like that anymore.

They say it will be almost identical to the one in Japan a few years ago. The worst thing about the Cascadia Fault is that it doesn't make any noise until it ruptures, so people get very complacent. Vancouver will be pretty well demolished if they get a 9.0 or bigger, and Victoria could very well be wiped off the map by a Tsunami if the earthquake is centered south of Vancouver Island. The worst part of all of this is that we are so unprepared to deal with this as a country.
