Now Highway 17 is closed in Northeastern Ontario betweenness Iron Bridge and Thessalon.

This is starting to remind me of April 17 (sarcastically, ironically, 417) when 2 fatal accidents happened around Sudbury area.

Has anyone noticed that Highway 11 between Longlac and Hearst has been closed due to collision at least 3 times during the past month?

The 11/17 divided highway from Nipigon to Red Rock 9 is complete and open to traffic as of yesterday. I've not travelled it yet but my wife had to make the trek yesterday. Next time I make the trip myself I will try to grab some pictures and post them.

Also is the speed limit still 90 kph?

Speed limit is still 90 kph.

As for the bridge they are still paving and working all around it. Won't be too long though until that's completed either. And then the construction will be done until the government changes... Right Vid?

I did this circle route for my trip to the old homestead. Did a ferry ride and rim of Lake Superior camping trip on the way to Manitoba and bag drove the three 8 hour plus days through the States and Sudbury.

I thought the 17 around the lake was pretty good. Lots of newly paved sections and passing lanes and very little truck traffic (due to the 11 being the preferred trucker route). Camping was excellent. There was a big rerouting project going on east of Dryden. I was wondering if they would twin the part they were working on because it would make sense to do it now while all the equipment is there. It seemed like there was enough clearing to make that happen. Was very happy to see the prairies though, unlike many Canadians, the Canadian Shield and endless pine trees quickly loses its appeal to me.

Once again Manitoba wins the award hands down for the worst highways in Canada. Roads designed for pick-up or 1 ton grain trucks are nowhere near adequate for the B-train grain trucks and livestock liners that roar down these roads at 100km per hour. The roads are pounded to shit and there seems to be no appetite to do what's required to fix the problem.

Heading back through the States was pretty good but there are sections in the UP that need to be improved.

Re-entered Canada at SSM was held up 4 times for paving, culvert replacement and blasting (somewhere between the Espanola turnoff and Sudbury). Between North Bay and Arnprior I was wondering if I was ever going to get on 4 lanes again!

Overall the driving experience wasn't too bad, but I wish both level of governments would just pick a route and get the hell going with improving the highway to a 4 lane standard.

East of Dryden? You mean Highway 17 & Highway 622? Unfortunately MTO simply wanna realign that part though.

As for picking a route in between, I have a crazy (read: very costly) idea.

Extend 417 to Whiteshell (MB) along Lake Superior (yes, lots of rock blasting, but hey let's use that as a replacement of the basic income project). Then double-track Northland rail along Highway 11 until Nipigon. From there on to Canada Centre Port in Winnipeg, put the track along CN (the rail track that goes along Highway 17 in NWO west of Thunder Bay), get into an agreement so both can share the tracks. The part about railway is to improve both passenger and freight service across NWO and along "gateway to the far north".

In addition, Northland Rail should takeover the unprofitable Huron Central Rail and the dysfunctional Algoma Canyon Rail.

I think this rather belongs in the category of "transport fantasy of northern Ontario".

Actually what am I saying...

Twin 11 between Nipigon and North Bay (realigned to leave 17/417 near Sturgeon Falls and join the current alignment north of Marten River) and renumber the entire highway between Nipigon and Georgina (including Bratford Bypass) Highway 404.
I've always thought that a number more well-known to people living in big cities will jack up the AADT during tourist season?

The suggestion to provincialize the unprofitable rails still stands. But now, double-track along CP along Lake Superior Shore instead, until Centre Port.

I'd put money on it. I really don't see them proceeding with these projects. They don't have any political, fiscal or logistical reason to actually go ahead with them.

Highway 11 is closed south of Temagami for truck recovery for most of the day. Detour via QC Route 101.

Does anyone know why that's such a troublesome spot for vehicles?

A lot of curves is the only issue road-wise when it's nice weather. But the big issue is that many of the transport trucks drive dangerously. They are often over the yellow lines when going around curves. Some really pick up speed when going downhill.

I drove by this collision en route to Timmins on Highway 11 on Tuesday afternoon. There was a clean-up contractor on site and they had booms set across the lake in two passes to contain any oil that was leaking out of the trailer. The truck was fully in the lake, with only the side of the trailer sticking out of the water by a few inches. It was quite the site to see.
