Yes, this.

The only busy spots on this highway seem to be between the ON border and Kenora. On weekends. Trucks heading to the GTA will take the southern route.

Usually yes, but if the number of South Asians looking to gain permanent residency in Canada via truck driving increases, we may see more trucks on TCH. I’m not making a case against such. It’s simply FYI.
And with more trucks, you know what’s annoying? 2 trucks in front with only dashed yellow lines... Also, as a side note, there have been bad accidents involving just trucks too...

Interesting design, however, I feel as though the province would move to a parclo/trumpet interchange when they decide to upgrade as it wpuld just require 1 bridge going over the TCH and 1 bridge over the rail line unlike the 4 you have illustrated in your design.

I have never been so angry in my life about a highway proposal. Two national highways and they propose a roundabout?? Wait till a storm whether a thunderstorm or blizzard happens with zero visibility and a semi can’t stop in time. Highway 2/3 isn’t a major national highway system. Lower volumes which makes it more sustainable. This is just ludicrous what is happening there..

Lol why is 44 divided here? I know it used to be TCH half a century ago. Still, it’s a rather odd place to be divided.
They used to use the space in the middle to charge for entry to the provincial park, there was a little shack there too

They're relying on the billions they're saving with Brian's glorified traffic circle at 1/16. Otherwise there's no actual way that the perimeter gets funded

Is there even an RFP out for this roundabout? I thought the Province wanted to do this in the summer. One can only hope a senior engineer or two at MI are trying to talk down the Province from this absurd idea.

How is a roundabout an improvement at 1 and 16? Might as well just improve the current stoplight intersection and drop a bunch of rumble strips if we're going to be cheap. Maybe avoid some deaths I guess, but likely to have a jackknifed semi there every day blocking the highway in the roundabout.

Do it right or don't bother.

How about someone starts a petition over it? I'm not eloquent enough lol. I can only sign.

I was going to suggest a petition as well. This whole concept of a roundabout makes absolutely no sense.. absolute garbage.

I’ll sign it.
Unbelievable it would take a grass roots petition to stop something so idiotic. How do people in these positions not see the lunacy of a round-a-bout at TCH 1 & 16.

It may or may not* work but we should try. When someone has a link ready, let us know.

Actually, as a plus, in the petition, we can ask M.I.T. to replace all lights on TCH with actual interchanges.

* Remember the downgrade of design around Chase, B.C., and the now functioning traffic light at Field Access Road?

They're working on it, they need money for that. The engineers at MI know what needs to be done. It's the Province that needs to front the money.

If we're actually going to band together, we can't make a petition that's a mish-mash of every single gripe about Manitoba's highway system. Singular focus.

At least BC has the excuse that those locations are rural and in difficult terrain. Manitoba is flat as can be and most of the light intersections surround a metro that is approaching 1 million people.

Good point. Singular focus it is. Is it appropriate for me to ask for horrific images of crashes at that intersection in case I end up being the one making this petition?

Geologically speaking though, you also need to look beneath the surface. Flat terrain isn’t necessarily easy if other things are at play. (I’m not sure if I learned that lesson when I was designing 4 lanes of TCH throughout Northern Ontario.)

No, it can be both. Manitoba has to be just about the last jurisdiction in the developed world without a proper highway system. This stuff should have been done decades ago. Not one or two, either but like 50 or 60 years ago. But the province has always found a way to put highway infrastructure at the very bottom of its to-do list and shunts it off in favor of social programs at every opportunity. I have nothing against social programs but there comes a time when the focus HAS to be highway infrastructure.

We can circulate a petition demanding the province invest in interstate standard highways that urges to province not to put in features like roundabouts on national highways. What jurisdiction anywhere in the world would allow this other than Manitoba?

Okay, you asked so here it is...la petition:

I fixed that for you.
Darn, can someone write it up then? I really don't know where to begin. I will start a separate thread for this.
