An update from the ABJ with new renderings:

https://www.bizjournals.com/austin/n...-600-guad.html

From the article:
Quote:
With initial site work on track to start later this year on 6th + Guadalupe, Lincoln already is laying the groundwork for another skyscraper just a few blocks away at 401 W. Fourth St.

If you're like me and go with Esc key mashing instead of a paid ABJ subscription to read their articles, you may not always see the photos/renderings in the article. But this link has the renderings:

That first picture of the rendering of the west side looks really great.

It really is an excellent building. I personally like the distinction between the different programs. I think the balconies on the residential section are seamless and I’d be interested in seeing renderings for that open space right near the roofline (possibly an amenity Deck?). Overall, the office looks very sleek. The fins look like they might be glass, which would be a feature that I’m pretty sure only the DA’s office has - at least downtown.

500 w. 2nd street has them too, but just one small part of it.

"Other than working around capitol view corridor restrictions, there aren’t height restrictions because it’s in the Central Business District, Blume of Gensler noted."

I found this quote from the article to be very interesting. What about the FAA restrictions that we have been hearing about? Isn't that the reason this and Block 71 shrunk in height?

Potential FAA height restrictions are causing some confusion. The FAA ended up approving the 555' height for Block 71. When the FAA initially flagged that height for further study, the height for Block 71 was reduced slightly. Whether that height reduction was due to the FAA or just a coincidence in timing is unknown.

The CVC terrace is nice. There's no ground level retail. The building is two buildings (or maybe three).

There has always been ground floor retail in this project - 25K sq. ft. From today's ABJ article:

Quote:
About 25,000 square feet of ground-floor retail could fit restaurants or a small grocery store.

That's good. I couldn't see it in the renderings. The building is fugly in any case... that was my main point. Austin deserves better.

Oh goody. Another generic, modernist glass slab, just what Austin needs.

Love how some of you guys were just crying for height a short couple of years or so ago, complaining about Austin's "400' plateau". Now that Austin has a real signature tower that will dominate our skyline for the foreseeable future as well as add balance between the Austonian and the Independent, some of you same folks have suddenly become self proclaimed architecture critics and taste makers and seem to relish in slamming this building at every opportunity. It's a great unique building, it'll look incredible on the skyline from just about anywhere that you can see downtown Austin from, and it's not getting "dumbed down" at the last minute from what we can tell so far. Some of you need to get over yourselves. My two cents. If you're offended by this, well that's too bad.

I agree with your sentiment. But that poster you quoted is in California, and has some history of trolling Austin. So don't worry about it too much.

I agree this will be a signature tower and I like it, but hopefully it won't be (my definition) THE signature tower in Austin. Still waiting for a sleek 900 + footer. I think when this one is completed, a lot of people will end up liking it. If not, well to each their own. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I have been posting for a while and have been known to go against the grain many many times to the point of ruffling a few feathers.

I've been on this forum since 2001. (Even though it says 2003. Something happened years ago which deleted several accounts, then I re-upped.) Anyway, I've been an official architecture critic and tastemaker since studying architecture at UT (a world-class architecture school) in 1985... 33 years ago. Nothing sudden about that.

No, it's not. Austin is unique and deserves better.

Translation: Defer to me, guys. Not only did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, I designed it first. Also, I'm "official".
