Agreed, a d bag goalie on the tail end of his career, couldn't go to a better place . I can see him and Burke getting along like two peas in a pod.

The next couple of weeks are gonna be exciting for hockey geeks, starting with the expansion draft and NHL awards tomorrow, then the NHL draft and free agent frenzy.

Hearing (unfounded) rumors of an Eberle for Hamonic deal. Would love to see that.

Hamonic is also tied in rumors for Matt Duchene. Who would you take if both offers were on the table and you were trying to get help for Tavares?

Duchene for me. He has a higher ceiling hockey-wise then Eberle.

As per @JSportsnet @GoldenKnights are taking Griffin Reinhart. Not a big loss for #Oilers, but 1st and 2nd round picks to acquire him were.

Edmonton Oilers trade Jordan Eberle to New York Islanders for Ryan Stome. Gives Oilers cap space to re-sign top stars McDavid, Draisaitl.

Damn, was hoping it would be for Hamonic but it still is a necessary move to free up some cap space.

http://edmonton.ctvnews.ca/oilers-sign-kris-russell-to-four-year-16m-deal-1.3473646

Quote:
The Edmonton Oilers and defenceman Kris Russell agreed on a four-year, $16 million deal Friday.

According to TSN’s Ryan Rishaug, Russell will make $5 million in the first year of the deal, $4.5 million in the second year, $4 million in the third year and $2.5 million in the final year. The deal includes a $2 million signing bonus in Year 1 and $1 million in Year 4.

Rishaug also reported the defenceman has a modified no-trade clause in the last two years of the deal.

Sadly sends the wrong message. You have the new face of the league in YEG, who took home nearly all of the hardware. You have a team that came within 1 win of the conference final. You have a brand new arena. But we'll still pay 4x4 for a 4/5 defenceman and throw in signing bonuses. Give me a break. We should be able to attract that level of talent for a discount at this point. This makes me concerned that we'll never reach the next level.

Its a good contract - front loaded and Russell is a quality defenceman. Now all you complainers out there - stop bitching

Russel performed real well with Oiler, he deserves this deal as long as he continues to perform. The smallest defenseman that nobody can get through.

I would have preferred front loading more of the contract, but I bet he would have never signed.

Totally agree, he played very well (and he played on his off side). Let's not forget he was the leading shot blocker in the entire league, and that was in playing 68 games.

What do people think a second pairing D man costs nowadays? Who would they rather of gotten?

Here is a list of UFA D men: http://www.spotrac.com/nhl/free-agents/defenseman/

The Islanders are demanding two 1st round picks for Hamonic, the player some people thought we would be getting for Eberle.
