Happy 200th Sir John A. Macdonald
(Hamilton Mountain News, Mark Newman, Jan 2 2015)

They will be raising a glass or three in honour of Canada’s first prime minister later this month.

The Sir John A. Macdonald Society will be celebrating Sir John’s 200th birthday with events slated for Jan. 10 and 11.

“This is the founding father of our country,” said local historian Robin McKee, who is also president of the local Sir John A. Macdonald Society. “If the guy was not born, we would not be Canada.”

McKee said the society, the first of its kind in Canada, began 50 years ago and he’s hoping for a good turn out at the Jan. 10 dinner at the Scottish Rite and the annual wreath laying ceremony at the statue of Sir John in Gore Park on Jan. 11.

The Gore Park event is slated to begin at 1:45 p.m. with a procession from the Crowne Plaza Hotel to the statue followed by some remarks and birthday cake at the Slainte Irish Pub on Bowen Street.

McKee said Macdonald represents an important part of our nation’s heritage having written most of the British North America Act, Canada’s constitution.

He noted Hamilton was a big supporter of Macdonald in the mid 19th century and when ever Macdonald was in the area he would visit the west Mountain Auchmar estate of his friend and colleague Isaac Buchanan.

“We were his backing in Ontario for years,” said McKee.

For ticket information about the dinner, see www.hamiltonhistory.ca.

65 King Street East in Gore Park is getting a facelift. They've pealed back the ugly covering to reveal a nice brick facade. Looks like the building dates back to the mid 1850s. It started out and remained as a hardware store up until the 1920s. In the 1920s through the 40s it was Leslie Shoes. It was Reitman's women clothing from the 1940s through to the 1970s. Some may remember it as Granada TV in the 1980s and 90s.

^Yay! This is what really turns my crank! Can't wait to see more buildings on King, in particular, transformed.

I think it is a great sign that some of these upper floors along King might get used. I go to the convenience store on that block close to John often and asked what was on the upper floors a year ago. The answer was that it was pretty much abandoned.

Anyone know what's on the upper floors of Cheapies now? I remember a couple of years ago they did some work, although I don't know if it is occupied.

At the least, all these upper floors would probably fetch a decent amount as residential. I guess the question is whether it is worth the money to renovate.

These would make great boutique offices. Things like design studios, printshops, law offices, etc.

The decorative commemorative panels they've installed are well... slightly less than I'd expected. Will post a pic soon.

so great to see speedy money finally uncovered. too bad they chose such a hideous treatment for the windows. I guess double hung was too big an investment.

The city should crack down on these storefronts. So many buildings downtown are covered up in panelling. They should make that facade grant more accessible, if not mandatory

I agree and it would probably be better. However with residential you would have no problems finding tenants from day one.

Phase II (Hughson to James) of the Gore Park makeover will start in 2016 (that is is council approves the funding of $1.8 million). Each phase is $1.8 million so total cost is $5.4 million.

Those plaque things look a little too much like bus stop advertisements to me.

I think they're nice. I was down on the day they were putting them up and there was a ton of people walking around, checking everything out or just hanging out, reading a book, using their phones. It's refreshing to see people in the park who aren't selling drugs or getting wasted. It's gonna make a great venue next November. Lots more room for people to congregate around the cenotaph.
