More coverage of United States Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg visits to Jackson
Video Link

Quote:
JACKSON, Miss. —
United States Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg visited Jackson Friday to talk about the funds from the Biden-Harris Administration to improve infrastructure and transportation.

Buttigieg and Rep. Bennie Thompson took a tour of the Medgar Evers Home Museum in Jackson. They participated in a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of a $20 million project to rebuild Medgar Evers Boulevard.

In addition to improving the actual street, lights will be added and the area will get a makeover.

Thompson said, "Part of this infrastructure and transportation package that I voted for is to bring communities back and make them whole."

"It was so meaningful to be in the Medgar Evers home, and part of why it's powerful is that it helps remind us all of the meaning of this boulevard we're investing in," Buttigieg said.

Thursday, Buttigieg visited the Rosedale Bolivar County Port.

"Looking at the very different kinds of projects we're supporting, looking at the port in Rosedale, the Slack Harbor where they bring in goods and where they export crop to feed the world," Buttigieg said.

The transportation secretary said he planned to make a couple more stops in the Capital City before leaving Mississippi.

Andrew Jackson statue to come down at Jackson City Hall

Quote:
JACKSON, Miss.—Andrew Jackson still stands outside City Hall in Jackson, Miss., nearly four years after the City Council officials decided to remove the statue dedicated to the slave-owning president who was responsible for the Trail of Tears and is also the capital city’s namesake.

The Jackson City Council voted 5-1 on July 7, 2020, to relocate the statue, which has stood overlooking the Josh Halbert gardens outside City Hall since 1972.

But the council has yet to decide when the relocation will take place and where the statue’s new home will be if it is removed at all, Ward 7 Councilwoman Virgi Lindsay said in a statement to the Mississippi Free Press on Monday.

“The matter is still in committee,” she said. The council has not decided whether to address the issue again; it would take a vote to bring the issue out of committee and back onto the council agenda, she said.

Jackson State University launches pioneering Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP) to combat Mississippi teacher shortage

Quote:
Jackson State University (JSU) is proud to announce a new Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP) designed to tackle Mississippi’s teacher shortage. The program offers students and their families a significant promise: if post-graduation income is below $45,000, the LRAP will aid in repaying federal student loans, private alternative loans, and parent PLUS loans. Notably, JSU is the first HBCU to implement such a groundbreaking initiative.

Jackson State’s Vice President of Enrollment Management, Kylon Alford-Windfield, emphasized the transformative potential of the LRAP. “Jackson State has a rich history as a teaching college, serving as a nurturing environment for young individuals to grow into tomorrow’s leaders,” he shared. “Our goal is to alleviate the financial burdens of our students, particularly teacher education students, enabling them to focus on their careers without the worry of student loan debt. We are proud to lead the way in providing practical, impactful support for our students’ futures.”

Commencing in the 2024-25 academic year, the program will be offered at no cost to all teacher education majors, as well as other incoming freshmen and transfer students as determined by Jackson State’s Office of Admissions.

“We are directly addressing the financial challenges that many of our graduates face,” said Janieth Wilson-Adams, Ph.D., Director of Undergraduate Admissions at JSU. “This initiative ensures that our students can focus on their professional aspirations and personal growth without the burden of overwhelming debt.”

Founded in 1877, Jackson State University was designated in 1940 by the State of Mississippi with a mission to train teachers. This mission remains critical today as the state continues to grapple with a severe teacher shortage. Remarkably, JSU produces approximately 67% of the Black educators in the capital city, highlighting its vital role in meeting this urgent need.

“While the value of a Jackson State degree extends far beyond financial metrics, we acknowledge that student loans are a significant barrier to higher education, particularly for aspiring teachers,” Alford-Windfield explained. “With this program, we are committed to assisting in loan repayment. If your income is modest, LRAP is here to support you.”

Jackson State University’s partnership with Ardeo Education Solutions to offer LRAPs further underscores the university’s commitment to supporting its students and addressing the state’s educational challenges.

Hinds County District Attorney Bids on Convention Center Hotel Project

Quote:
Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens is apparently trying to get into the hotel business. Mr. Owens' company submitted a bid for the Jackson Convention Center hotel project to the city of Jackson.

The city of Jackson issued a request for proposals for the Convention Center hotel project in September 2023 but later withdrew the RFP. The city issued a request for qualifications for the project on January 31, 2024.

JJ submitted a public records request for a list of all companies responding to the RFQ. The records provided stated Speed Commercial Real Estate, 2K Development LLC, and Facility Solutions Team submitted responses to the RFQ.

Speed Commercial Real Estate is owned by well-known commercial realtor Jeff Speed. The Secretary of State's website does not show any records of 2K Development. However, it is the last entry that is rather curious.

The District Attorney is apparently leading a "team" that will submit a bid for the Convention Center hotel project.

The city was supposed to open the "bids" on April 16. However, the recommendation nor approval of a bid have been placed on the agenda for subsequent meetings of the Jackson City Council.

Ward 1 Councilman Ashby Foote said he met with Mr. Owens, some out-of state "investors", and representatives from Facility Solutions Team for a business lunch at the Capital Club on February 29. Mr. Foote said they discussed the need for investment in downtown Jackson as well as a convention center hotel. The "investors" told Mr. Foote they wanted to know how "things work in Jackson." Earlier post.

The FBI raided Mr. Owens' courthouse office, the cigar bar he owns on Pearl Street, and his office at 200 North Congress Street last week.

Highest-rated Southern restaurants in Jackson by diners

Quote:
When you travel below the Mason-Dixon Line, you'll find some of the most mouthwatering, comforting cuisine in the U.S.: Southern food.

Southern dishes are a vital part of American cuisine, from hush puppies to ham hocks and beignets to barbecue. It's impossible to define a classic Southern meal, but a solid one starts with the sharp savory flavor of pimento cheese dip, followed by the delicious crunchiness of fried chicken or a spicy Louisiana étouffée, culminating with a sugary slice of chess pie that's best washed down with a tall glass of sweet tea.

What's unique about Southern fare is that multiple ethnic and cultural groups have influenced it. Spanish staples, such as potatoes and cocoa, are in many Southern dishes; the Acadians, who traveled to Louisiana from Nova Scotia and later became Louisiana Creoles, contributed their seafood to many Southern meals; African ingredients—okra, sorghum (an ancient grain), and black-eyed peas—became a part of the cuisine through the forced labor of enslaved people; French cooking methods, like braising and sautéing, are used for many Southern recipes; and Native Americans introduced corn to Southern recipes, yielding dishes like succotash and grits.

The Southern culinary scene is an explosion of cultures. To find out where you can sample some Southern offerings, Stacker compiled a list of the highest-rated Southern restaurants in Jackson using data from Yelp. Data is as of June 11, 2024. Businesses were selected using Yelp's ranking system, which calculates an adjusted rating value that takes into account the number of ratings as well as the rating score itself. Only restaurants with at least 10 reviews were considered. In an effort to highlight independent restaurants and local chains, restaurants with more than five locations nationally, based on the Yelp data, were not included.

Read on to find the perfect spot to get a taste of the South near you.

In Jackson, we're reconstructing a section of a former highway to make it a multimodal street with sidewalks, transit stops, and better lighting. Construction is about to get underway, thanks to funding from President Biden's infrastructure package.

Mixed-use & commercial development coming to Jackson (Lake Hico area)?

Senator John Horhn (D) District 26 of Mississippi Senate shared the possibility of mixed-use & commercial development coming to Lake Hico area via his social media account Instagram. Here is his exclusive information on the possibility of the new project:

The first two photos are the way Lake Hico used to look during most of its 71-year history. The rest are the way Hico looks as of noon today, now that the Rex Brown steam-electric plant has been decommissioned and the cooling pond (Lake Hico) drained. I’m here touring the site with @entergy VP, Demetrius Davis, who’s overseeing the de-commissioning. Jackson Public Schools has a tremendous opportunity!! Should the area become a mega-site for industrial development for companies like Amazon or a mixed-use site for residential and commercial development or a sports mecca for regional tourism? Either way, JPS owns a 720 acre contiguous site in the heart of City of @cityofjackson that is prime for development! Let’s not blow it!!!

Mississippi station breaks ground on media training center aimed at HBCUs (article from 2002 so the project is complete, will try get pictures)

Quote:
Gray Television’s media training center broke ground June 28, 2022, next to Jackson, Mississippi’s WLBT’s studios.

The facility, which is expected to cost more than $1 million, will serve as a training ground for students, with a focus on those attending historically Black colleges and universities in the state.

“We’re launching this project today in a wonderful and sobering facility that pays tribute to the Mississippi civil rights movement that changed the nation, and honors the men and women who used their voices at great cost to impact change,” Gray senior vice president of local media Sandy Breland said. “To the students that will take part in this program, this new training center: you, too, have a voice. And this is an opportunity for you to have a positive impact.”

The training center will be the first of its kind in the industry and the company has already selected 10 students to be part of the inaugural program that will start in the fall, though the new facility won’t be done until the spring of 2023.

In a story on the station’s website, Gray president and co-CEO Pat LaPlatney recalled taking a tour of the building more than 10 years ago and noticed a glassed-in area overlooking the studio.

LaPlatney asked what it was for — and was told it was a remnant from the days of segregation when Black individuals had to stay in specific parts of the building.

He also noted that the station’s previous owners routinely would switch to a “technical difficulty” sign when NBC was airing coverage of the civil rights movement during the 1950s.

Prior to Gray ownership, the station was also the first TV station to have its license revoked by the FCC for failing to serve the public interest after a series of events, including refusing to air the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court case in 1955 that determined that segregated schooling was unconstitutional.

The idea for the training center was pitched by VP and general manager Ted Fortenberry and the company moved forward with the idea.

Today’s WLBT team features a diverse lineup of staff, but Gray Television’s five-person executive leadership team is entirely male, with no person of color, though the station’s “senior leadership” team has more women and diversity.

In Fall 2022, Gray Television will welcome its first class of students to the Gray Media Training Center!

"The purpose of this program is to enlighten our students and let them get a feel of what they'll experience when they graduate and land a job." - Michael A. White Jr., Gray Media Training Center Director of Operations

The Gray Media Training Center will train and educate students who attend Mississippi colleges and universities, with a focus on HBCUs.

"My goal for the Gray Media Training Center is for us to put this city back on the map, to show students and the nation that we are here in Jackson training some of the best that the world has to offer."
