THe crazy thing is that stretches of 11 south of north bay built to the exact same standard are 100km/h. Politics kept the limit low, I suspect.

They don't want to raise the limit to 100km/h until the entire stretch is completed, to avoid having the limit go from 90 to 100 to 90 to 100 to 90 again between Thunder Bay and Nipigon. The Expressway in Thunder Bay won't be increased to 100 until it has interchanges.

Setting up a great road trip for next year. Heading to St Johns for the Regatta, then Boston for a Ball game. after heading to Indianapolis for an event then Denver/Boulder and finally north home. Got some of the route planned already. Drive from Edmonton to Montreal, but haven't decided if we should drive right to St Johns or pick up a flight from Montreal or somewhere in New Brunswick. This will be about 10,000 kms. last major road trip was 14 years ago to Montreal. Any suggestions.

Yeah, here's one. Go south of a couple of the Great Lakes so that you hit Minneapolis, Chicago and Detroit, then take the 401 all the way through Toronto (dip down the 427 to the Gardiner and then back up the Don Valley Parkway, don't just stay on the 401, that's boring--or better yet, switch to the 403 at Woodstock and connect to the QEW at Hamilton) to Montreal. Stop in any of the cities overnight, or just enjoy the skyline awesomeness from the highways as you motor through.

Funny enough I've done those routes when I lived in TO. And when I hauled boats back and forth across the country.

Maybe it's just me since I now live in the midwest but those are some of the most boring roads in existence. I'd recommend you take the 17 in northern Ontario, really a forgotten gem. I suppose you could cycle around and take the midwestern road one way the the Canadian road the other. In any case, my most useful advice would be to bring tons of audiobooks!

Ah, I see. Nothing really new for you, then.

The first time I drove through downtown Chicago on the I-90 was a magical experience. It was amazingly epic how the suburban houses gradually evolved into bungalows, then older houses, then finally tenements. I was just 18 and on my way to Winnipeg. Good times.

If your plate is not from a neighbouring province, you could tempt fate and use the 407/412. I had cars with BC and NS plates, and never saw a single bill.

Thanks other than maybe having to go into TO to visit friends we were planning on going north and straight into Montreal. After that we haven't decided. And for the American side, I've done Chicago, Minni, Through the Dakotas and Wyoming. (devils tower, Mount Rushmore, Little Bighorn and Wall Drugs).

I was wonder more east of Montreal.

If you're going to do the Boston-Montreal drive, there are plenty of picturesque well-preserved little villages near it.

First Sign I saw was coming out of Chicago. I swear they were every 10 miles after. But yah did it. and would recommend for anyone into kichy Americana. But I could not get a Mount Rushmore snow globe there.

Oh also saw the Corn Palace.

Why do we not have great roads side attractions as these anymore.

Widen Highway 403 up and down the escarpment to help bring jobs to airport lands: Planners
City planners say congestion on the highway is hurting business, want the province to act

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/hamilton/w...jobs-to-airport-lands-planners-1.4312338

Traffic congestion on Highway 403 between Highway 6 and Main Street is causing headaches for airport and cargo businesses in Hamilton.

That's just one of the issues potentially holding back job growth and business health in the city, according to a new report heading for city councillors' review next week.

The report is written by environment and growth planners at the city.

They want the province to expand Highway 403 "from two to three lanes between the Lincoln Alexander Parkway and Main Street both downbound and upbound as soon as practically possible."

It's one of two highway projects the city would like the province to prioritize to help its economic development efforts. They also recommend upgrading the Highway 5 and 6 interchange within the next five years.

"More and more concerns have been expressed by our airport operator and related courier (and) cargo businesses, regarding increased congestion along the Highway 403, between Highway 6 and Main Street," the report states.

"This is creating major delays for goods movement, which negatively impacts their business operations."

Currently, the highway is three lanes upbound after the Aberdeen Avenue on-ramp, but only two lanes down the escarpment.

Some of the overpasses are quite large and old but weren't designed to have a wide roadway more than two lanes going through from what I remember seeing. Longwood Road is a good example. Some of the rebuilding would be quite expensive and I'm guessing that the MTO has put it off until now when new overpasses are needed.

The mainlanders are talking about us.

Social media updates from traffic officers tracking multiple drivers hitting over 140 kilometres an hour prompted Hickey to send a blunt notice this week to clients across the province.

"While there are many factors that influence accidents, there is one that we see that comes up over and over," it said. "Speed kills. So here is our message to you drivers doing 144 km/h: We don't want your business."

The note goes on to say: "We'll do everything within the rules to see that you end up in Facility Association where the worst drivers belong at the highest prices. Maybe that will slow you down. Why? Because we want to protect our good clients from you."

Hickey has been "bombarded" with calls and messages of thanks since he spoke out, he said.

"I'm sort of shocked at the reaction it has got but obviously there's an undercurrent here of frustration at what's going on on our highways."

Why do we have laws if there is no enforcement.

I should be scared of getting pulled over. I should not know the top speed of my bike (160km/hr).

If you want to see enforcement come to AB. Then be thankful your police don't act as revenue collectors with guns.
