I think everyone can be a bit more confident about this one, mainly cuz it seems more solidly backed....based on comments from the previous devlpr & owner, sonny astani, who implied the new owners were gung ho, comments from local leaders...inc the woman running the dt business association...& what appears to be a company that doesn't have the unknown, shaky background of someone like the person who kept promising that the glass tower proj catercorner from the elleven condo tower was a few months away from groundbreaking....which ended up being nothing but a series of broken promises.

however, the fact the LA central proj a few yrs ago got to the stage where a barricade was actually built around the block but nothing ever happened afterwards, or where the park fifth proj had a rather ambitious sales center & fancy website but ended up a big kaput, does make some of your skepticism understandable.

btw, thanks for the scoop, lasportsfan, & also to blackcat for the update about the 9th & olive property.

in celebration (& hope) that another parking lot in the hood will be sent packing very shortly, I'll post these images to remember the current 8th & grand by....

I wonder how the removal of the parking lot will affect business at bottega louie? and how will the new devlpr handle the crossway between the southside of the bldgs facing 7th st & the new apt bldg? astani's ppl were planning something ambitious like this, but I don't know if the new version will be as bold....



^ however, if a public walkway with stores has been eliminated from the new plans, that could be good in one way: such a design may end up not attracting enough pedestrians, funnel too many ppl away from nearby 7th st & grand ave, & end up a lightly used, mostly empty alley.

Is there any way to see building construction permits being issued by the City for 9th and Olive, or any other project for that matter?

I drove by it yesterday and didn't see any equipment, but there is a very large Joe's Parking banner that instructs monthly parkers "DURING CONSTRUCTION: Use 2nd Entrance". I take that to mean that something should be starting soon.

As far as the 8th and Grand lot is concerned, there were still a fair amount of cars parked there yesterday, but I did notice the little tractor with a pretty substantial pile of sandbags. And the giant Joe's Parking signs fronting Olive St. have been removed.

If it was parked outside the gates on the Hill Street side, it was some sort of equipment that belongs to the city. At least that was there on Saturday.

As LASportsFan reported earlier today, the fence is up at 8th and Grand.



Carmel Partners built a large student housing complex at UC Davis a couple years back that has turned out very well so far. Their plans aren't quite as ambitious as the vision Astani had for the site, but they do good work.

I'll second that. He was the first person...that I'm aware of or can recall....at ssp to ever post rather up close pics of the clark hotel. I read recently that the owners of that bldg & their embassy bldg on Grand ave appear to have stopped renovation work on the latter. And I'm guessing their clark bldg still is in poor shape.

thanks for the updates & pics. You & losangelessportsfan make a good tag team. I'm surprised the crane at the 8th & hope proj hasn't risen yet. I'm guessing that even though the apt proj at 8th & grand will be shorter, that it also will have a crane.

westsidelife's caution does make sense since I can never forget how when the plywood walls went up around the LA central proj...across from staples ctr....we....or at least I....was totally sure that new devlpt was 100% guaranteed.

if the 9th & olive tower does break ground shortly...& the owners of the clark hotel & embassy finally get their act together....everything in total....from the gateway proj in chinatown to the north to the apt bldg to the south, around Fig & Pico, to the new projs west of the pasadena fwy, to the santa fe proj in the arts district to the east, will add up to
