The only way this would make sense is if they are talking about a Tanger style factory outlet centre. This could be a regional draw. If they are talking about a standard big box development then this proposal is daft. It is too far from the isocenter of metro Halifax's population base and would be unnecessary competition for both DC and Bayer's Lake.

If memory serves me (having been to that Costco), I think there is a portion of the underground parking for the building available to the public. Don't quote me on that - but I seem to remember seeing an elevator to 'parking'.

They take the skytrain! Never owned a car and lived in New Westminster and worked in East Van and it took me 20 minutes to get to work via skytrain. Basically the equivalent of commuting from Middle Sackville to Downtown Halifax. It can be done with a little forward thinking here.
Well let's hope that I get one of those jobs - I'd love to come back to the East...I miss my family there.

I really don't think most of the things I've pointed out are new, they certainly aren't my ideas and I take no credit for them. I just happen to know about them...which is half the battle. Having met the man who created Vancouverism (Larry Beasley) and Ecodensity (Brent Toderian, who I count as a good friend) it's great to have coffee with them and just talk shop. Brent is a huge resource...following his twitter opens up new ideas!

But more importantly, most of the ideas I've mentioned are just common sense! Why demo old office buildings if we could make them new residential (like Melbourne)? Maybe I'm one of the few planners who uses common sense anymore lol. (jk)

I question whether Nova Scotia will have a population of 1 million-plus in 25 years, never mind Halifax.

I seem to recall the last census figures we were something like 922 000 or somewhere in that ballpark. 1 million is absoutely going to be a provincial figure, and soon, Halifax.. eeeeeeh.. less likely lol

Thank god, their old site felt really immature, childish and not professionally thought out at all. I was in the midst of designing a new one to send to them and be like "please, stop using your current one.." Glad to see it's been vastly improved.

I think NS at over 1 million is going to happen (matter of time). As for HRM; I don't think it's impossible to see it at 750,000 in the next 25 years if the economic domino effect takes hold (ship building, companies that support ship building - all create more jobs, which leads to other industries growing).

The second photo of the air field is quite interesting - you can see the bridges they've replaced (in dark grey). I took westjet this time to get back and came out of gate 18 and it's showing it's age. I normally fly Air Canada and can always bet, I'll be out of gate 22. It was showing some rust too.

Interesting to note the bridge removed at 'gate 9', but still could be reinstalled they needed it. If you aren't sure where I'm talking about, it's the gate to the left of the AC express regional jet on the left hand side. You can see where the jet bridge connector was installed, but the bridge isn't there. It had been, but was removed.

I hope so (I'm pretty optimistic, actually) but I don't think it'll be soon. After a good few years between '08 and 2011, NS has been losing population for the past couple of years. These charts paint a pretty unpleasant picture, as does this one.

The government's population projections show the province peaking right around where it is now, and then entering a slow but steady population decline for the foreseeable future.

Thing is, that's largely due to Cape Breton and a few other rural jurisdictions which are out-migrating to Alberta at an enormous rate. We could well see a scenario over the next few decades where Nova Scotia overall shrinks, even as Halifax grows. But 750,000 within 25 years might be wee bit over-optimistic.

None of us knows how the shipbuilding contract will shake out, and I'm very optimistic about it, but it's still taken 20 years to add 30,000 people, and the population has been in decline since 2011.

Air Canada Introduces Halifax - Fort Lauderdale Seasonal Flights

MONTREAL, July 31, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - Air Canada announced today that it will launch weekly seasonal flights between Halifax and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, beginning December 14, 2013 until the end of April, 2014. Air Canada will operate flights on Saturdays using 97-seat Embraer E190 aircraft offering a choice of Executive or Economy Class service and featuring complimentary seatback entertainment throughout the aircraft. Flights are timed to offer customers easy connections to and from major Air Canada destinations in Atlantic Canada. Air Canada's new service complements its existing Halifax winter weekly seasonal service to Tampa and twice weekly to Orlando.

"Our upcoming winter sun schedule offers our customers in Atlantic Canada a choice of several popular holiday destinations to escape the winter cold," said Marcel Forget, Air Canada's Vice President, Network Planning. "Our new Fort Lauderdale service complements Air Canada's existing Halifax flights to Tampa and Orlando. This winter, Air Canada will be offering 12 per cent more seats from Halifax to the warm sun and beaches of Florida."

"We are delighted to welcome Air Canada's seasonal service to Fort Lauderdale," says Jerry Staples, Halifax International Airport Authority Vice President, Air Service Marketing & Business Development. "Southeast Florida, Fort Lauderdale, Miami and West Palm Beach are becoming increasingly popular among sun seekers and this additional service provides our passengers with another great option to meet their winter travel needs."

Another great destination that takes advantage of Halifax's U.S. preclearance.

The check-in area upgrade is moving along (from a few days ago):

More greenery than your average airport terminal, I'd say:

(both pictures are my own.)

I have been in many airports and I believe Halifax rates right up there in modern design and seems to be doing everything right. I think their management team is doing a great job and have proper plans in place now and into the future!

Here is a video showing images of the upgrades taking place. It looks like there will be a ton of open space compared to what used to be there.

nice. The airport has certainly come a long long way in the last decade. I remember flying in for a job interview a while ago, and it was so 1950/50s that it was unclear if I had arrived on a CRJ or a DeLorean.
