Major engineering miss discovered. 15 nelson studs at the base of supporting columns missed on every single floor beginning at 3. Columns being cut open, floors jackhammered, including on finished floors. $4 million insurance claim and entire separate set of contractor subs. The fun continues.

Okay, for those of us who are not structural engineers, what are nelson studs, and why are they a major factor?

The nelson studs stick up from the beam and when you pour the grout for the hollowcore it locks all the pieces together, how did the engineer's inspector miss this 38 floors later, seems a little severe for all that rework, must be a wind loading issue

The description of the issue can't be fully accurate. The columns are bolted/welded together.

The nelson studs would only be on the top flange of the exterior perimeter steel beams at each floor (the interior delta beams don't use nelson studs). The beams frame into the columns.

Maybe this refers to some sort of hollow-core support ledge that was missed at some of the columns (because the columns are too wide for the hollowcore to span across to the beams on either side).

Either way, it's a floor diaphragm issue.

Yes, they have been building those on every floor. It appears because the elevator core is more to the east, so they need these retaining walls on the west side.

Never noticed them before, but I guess that angle was always blocked by the core from camera on Main Street

Earls sign is installed on the ground level, facing the southeast corner of Main & Graham.
