Toronto is still on 15 and on pace for 44 for the year.

the next lowest year I can find since 1990 was 49 in 1999

In Bourget, east of Ottawa, 3 Ontario Provincial Police officers responded to gunshots at 2 am. One was killed and the other 2 injured. Suspect’s in custody.
This is like what, the 2nd cop killed in line of duty in Ontario this year?

I think murders are somewhat seasonal: people are way more "out and about" in the summer. You can't assume Jan-Apr is going to be representative of the entire year.

In semi-related news, right now Ontario is on track (if current trends continue!) to a record-shattering low year for drowning fatalities while having a record-shattering high year for snowmobile fatalities.

There was a murder overnight in Ottawa as well so I think that's 8.

Montreal I believe is still at 7.

Murders are down 40% Year to date in Toronto and on course for the fewest murders in over 33 years despite population growth.
when you factor in population growth 2023 might be the lowest murder rate in Toronto's history

Indeed, Montreal is at 7 for the area served by the Montreal City Police Department (SPVM), ~ 2.0M people

The entire province is at 13 (including the 7 from Montreal), for 8.8M people

We've seen worse years.

Montreal at 8 after the 39-year-old wife of a mafia guy was shot while driving her car.

Her father-in-law was murdered some years ago, though her husband is still alive.

This might signal the start of a new mafia war as typically family members are off-limits.

Glad my kid who lives in Montreal isn't working in the heart of Little Italy anymore.

What does little Italy have to do with a murder that took place miles away in CDN ? Plus the vast majority of Italians live in RDP and St. LEO. , also the Montreal mafia is based in Laval (most of the top members have lived there for over a decade) get your facts straight before posting more nonsense

That's not really where the mafia guys live or hang out these days. Maybe 50-60 years ago? But now you'll find them in Laval, St-Laurent, Cartierville etc.

True, that's a good point.

The traditional Little Italy on St-Laurent is pretty quiet you're right.

A 38 year old man was shot and killed in Montreal in the wee hours this morning. Connected to the woman's killing?

Probably not. This guy was from from Chicoutimi or something. So likely unrelated to the Italian mafia.

Unless someone hired him to come to town to do the hit on the lady, and then her husband's clan got to him before the police did.

Meanwhile, the shooting suspect in the homicide outside of Ottawa last night remains at large...
Stuff like this is really rare in this area.
Then again, according to https://www.insideottawavalley.com/n...fb1c74a79.html,

The assembled neighbours noted it was not uncommon for police to attend the residence in question.

I think Hamilton had its first homicide this year; however, it's a double homicide.

Apparently, the landlord of the house killed both tenants. I guess the landlord didn't like the state of the house and killed them, jeez.

The landlord barricaded himself in the home. Later in the night, the landlord was pronounced dead at the scene after an exchange of gunfire with a police officer.

Crazy, the housing market is making people go insane.

Pretty crazy story. Crazy how it happened and crazy these were the first homicides of the year! That probably means Hamilton already had its two homicides of the year. Hamilton despite being known for its mob activity, is generally a very safe city.

I won't mention how many we have in Winnipeg so far as I don't want to be accused of being a white supremacist. All i can say is we are in a race for the top spot with Toronto.

Quite shocked at how little attention the Paul Bernardo story is getting on here and elsewhere even.

why is it even a story.
Why should we care about his prisoner designations??
Do we discuss any other prisoners transfering?
