Well that would be breaking news with Toronto out that's for sure. Their spot would be taken by a US city though I'm guessing.

I doubt Toronto, or anyone else at this stage, backs out. Tickets will be selling for incredible amounts and the city will be electric throughout the event. Anybody deciding a few hundred million is too much for a city that large would be foolish.

Ya I can't see it happening either. The tourism during the event and beyond would more than pay for it.

There are always reports about cost-escalation, missed bid components, 'additional security' etc.

Happens, move on.

Revenues from hosting such an event always get inflated. Torontonians will go out and spend money regardless if the game is at BMO or the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. How much tourism will be generated with 200,000 tickets available?

Like I said, small chance. You can't discount a bread not circuses movement taking off.

The net gain in tourism for Vancouver or Toronto will not come close to covering the costs of hosting the World Cup. Since these cities are already tourist meccas there will not be any economic gains during the event. Money being spent by outsiders is just shifting from tourist A (who would be in those cities in non-World Cup years) to tourist B (who would be in those cities for the World Cup).

This was pretty much the case during the Winter Olympics in 2010.

Not very often has Vancouver been broadcast to over 200 countries around the world. There is another level of tourist popularity.

Dario Zulich Purchases Video Board to Improve Fan Experience

(Greater Sudbury, ON) Dario Zulich and SW Sports and Entertainment are very excited to announce a significant upgrade to the in-game experience. A $600,000 video board has been purchased by team owner Dario Zulich. The new centerpiece will be installed in time for the Sudbury Wolves/Five 2022-23 seasons. This will be one of the biggest improvements to happen to the arena in its more than 70-year history since it was originally built in 1951.

I don't know, how is South Africa's tourism industry doing compared to before? How about Russia? I wonder how many people are going to flock to Qatar after this year? As said, for places like Toronto and Vancouver, this will just displace the usual tourism, assuming it's held in the height of tourist season. And aggravated by the locals who just decide to avoid the downtown area during that time. Would be nice if the local politicians just admitted these are for stroking the local ego. I'm not against Toronto or Vancouver hosting and the money being spent, because there are things I like to do as well that taxpayer money supported, but I just wish the politicians didn't bullshit the supposed benefits.

FIFA (and the IOC) is such an ugly grifter organization and yet it pained me to see Montreal names in the bid book and to know that the city will miss out on the WC fun.

I love both the WC and the Olympics so much, and yet ironically their huge appeal to billions of people like me is precisely what allows the grift to live on.

I'm hesitant to call the Xi'an project the perfect stadium, every build has its own unique requirements and circumstances, but it goes without saying that Chinese projects are able to balance infrastructure benefits from all angles whilst building and developing stronger urban communities and neighbourhoods. Shows what central planning can accomplish when pointed in the right direction.

Last I checked China was no longer hosting the 2023 Asian Cup, though, so I don't know what's up with the video claiming that.

Blue Jays discussing possible bid for 2027 All-Star Game with Major League Baseball
Shi Davidi
July 20, 2022

LOS ANGELES – The Toronto Blue Jays are talking to Major League Baseball about a possible bid to host the 2027 All-Star Game, after the Rogers Centre is through an upcoming renovation, according to two industry sources.

...

The Blue Jays have only hosted the event once, back in 1991 during the dome’s second full season, and are certainly due to stage another. That contest was a 4-2 American League win, with Hall of Fame shortstop Cal Ripken Jr. the game’s MVP.

...

Hosting the all-star game would be an opportunity to showcase a refurbishment for the dome expected to begin this fall and take place over two off-seasons.

Final plans aren’t yet known, but initial discussions included the outfield being redone with elevated bullpens and asymmetric walls this winter (some season-ticket subscribers were recently informed that they’ll be relocated in 2023). The rest of the lower bowl reset will start in the off-season to follow.

It's being replaced... The new stadium is under construction on the old airport site.

Thats a shame its such a nice design the old one a smaller 25000 seat version for bc lions and whitecaps to me would be perfect if that could ever happen but likely will not for another 10 or 20 years

[QUOTE=CCF;9679623]Regina is really pushing new sports facilities - in particular as a strategy for downtown revitalization*

*none have solid funding, none have determined locations, all of these are just renderings and while the idea of each continues to linger, various locations proposed have already been shut down

Hockey Arena/event centre:

What's the bridge for over those circular steps? Will it be a ice skating rink where you can skate under the bridge? Or is there some sort of historical significance for it?

I agree, it is a beautiful stadium in a gorgeous setting. It's not even all that old (1994) so I'm surprised it's being replaced. But the good news is that the stadium will remain standing, they are just going to shrink seating capacity to 10,000 and use it as a local facility.

It appears to be a railway turntable, likely in homage to the rail yard that occupied the site until very recently.

It's not 200 countries but, the Canadian government buys billboards, tv ads, etc. that reach billions across Southeast Asia and the Middle East for a fraction of the cost of the games in Vancouver.
