Well lookie what I have here fellow noirishers. ..A very unique mystery location.

Seller's description:.."RARE HOLLYWOOD Ca., COTTAGE~ORIGINAL PHOTO~1925~CALIFORNIA."

Luckily, there is writing along the bottom of the photograph BUT it's rather difficult to read. .(obviously a plea for help)

As I was looking at the photograph my eye gravitiated toward -what appears to be- some sort of sign directly behind the white picket fence on the left. (see it?)


AND there appears to be some fancy writing on top of the sign!




I tried a few tricks to make it more legitable but nothing worked. (proof below)


ha ha.




And if all that weren't enough there's also writing on the back.

W. N. Horwitz had a photographic studio at 8083½ Sunset Blvd. according to the 1925 directory.

And then at 8165 Sunset Blvd. in the 1926 and 1927 directories.


Here's 8165 Sunset next door to the Liquor Locker in this 1973 Ed Ruscha pass.

The building was altered significantly in 1952.

Bar Marmont (run by the Chateau Marmont) apparently closed in 2017 for remodeling/renovations, but there's no indication it ever reopened. The Sunset Blvd. address (listed as 8171) doesn't bring up any new business there and, for some reason, GSV hasn't been by there since 2016.

The Googlemobile has been down Havenhurst Drive several times since 2016. It looks like the property was fenced off around 2018 and is now hidden by a hedge. At least the light pole is still there.

Meanwhile, a dump truck getting loaded with dirt had it's brakes fail and it careened down Clark Ave. and smashed into the back of the Whiskey A Go Go,
downing a power pole and knocking out electricity for a couple blocks.

A band scheduled for that night was "Boy Hits Car."

Nice find!

The building in back is at 715 E. 4th, and is a cold-storage warehouse and appears to have been purpose-built as such in 1903.

Ever since Noir Noir figured out that the mystery eBay photograph (below) was an old photography studio which later Bar Marmont, I've been trying to figure out the how the bar is (was) laid out.




A couple of days ago I happened upon this interesting snapshot of the interior that clearly shows the peaked roof. (except that it's flat at the very top)

But I became down-right confused after I came across this 2nd photograph...note the three window that also appear in the old eBay photo.

Mystery butterflies at Bar Marmont.

Years ago I happened upon photographs of paper butterflies on the ceiling and walls. I thought they were in a bar inside the main building (the chateau if you will) but now I believe the 'butterflies'
were in the separate Bar Marmont with the 8171 address. (Martin Pal mentioned the 8171 yesterday or the day before)



See, 8171 right there on the fence.



As a reminder here are the butterflies again. (I'm pretty sure I posted the images over ten years ago)





Thank God for the butterflies because that's a pretty ugly paneled ceiling.




update:

In this next image the butterflies are on a more substanial coffered ceiling.

Hmmm, but Kimberly's photograph (with the coffered ceiling shown above) was taken at the launch of a new parfume at the Bar Marmont in 2024. (we were all under the impression Bar Marmont closed in 2017)

Sooooo. . .do you think the bar (and the butterflies) moved somewhere inside the main building?

As difficult as it is to look past this gorgeous sleeper coach, does anyone recognize building behind it? The person who sent me the image said that the description cited Los Angeles, but neither of us recognize that building.
