Good to see that new apartment in skid row take over that building. Those buildings/businesses (the type with the shuttered metal roll screen over the doors and windos) found in that area of DTLA need to all be removed or changed.

Not much has changed with the Grand Avenue apartment site, but work just started on Friday.

Broad Museum is still chugging along, saw several workers welding today.

I tried to get reservations there last weekend, but they were booked until the upcoming Wednesday! Good signs! In other news, I'm in Tokyo right now. Arigato! it's surprising how car-focsed this city is. Highways criss-cross the urban landscape far more then they do in Los Angeles. Still an incredible city, though.

Does anybody know what's being built next to Dublin's on 7th street? There's been a big white construction box surrounding the retail spot over the last couple of months.

I'm going downtown shortly after the first. Are there any decent free WiFi hot spots at or near Union Station?

Well I couldn't get you a real update since the date only stuck to the Ritz Carlton area so all I could get were shots of the Courtyard Marriott.

Downtown landmark Grand Central Market is getting radical overhaul

by Betty Hallock

Quote:
Downtown L.A.'s Grand Central Market is undergoing a major overhaul intended to catapult the landmark community marketplace into a new food-retail age. The nearly 100-year-old open-air market on Broadway near 3rd Street houses more than 40 food stalls, which will be updated to reflect a changing downtown and the next generation of vendors while staying true to its legacy, planners say.

Owner Adele Yellin, president of the real estate development company started by her late husband, Ira Yellin, is spearheading the project and has hired consultants Joseph Shuldiner, who founded the Institute of Domestic Technology and Altadena Farmers Market, and Kevin West of Saving the Season. BCV, part of the design collaboration behind the Ferry Building Marketplace in San Francisco, is the architect, and Rick Moses is the developer.

Shuldiner and West say the renovation of the 27,000-square-foot market, built in 1917 on the ground floor of the Homer Laughlin Building, is a multi-phase, multiyear project that will fill empty stalls, attract new vendors and rejuvenate longtime retailers.

Geoff Palmer Building Big Fauxtalian Mixed-User in Bunker Hill

Quote:
The man who gave us faux-Italian apartment complexes the Orsini I, II, and II, the Pieros, and the Medici--all hugging the 110 freeway--is about to break ground on yet another freeway-adjacent project with an Italian name: the Da Vinci. Geoff Palmer's latest mixed-user will bring 526 apartments and 14,000 square feet of groundfloor retail to 909 West Temple Street at the very edge of Bunker Hill. Two buildings are planned, along with 1,000 new parking spaces. Palmer bought the site, which has an up-close view of the 110/101 interchange, back in 2004 and just secured a $56 million loan (covering just over half the price tag) to get the project built. According to the LA Business Journal (sub. req.), when construction starts early next year it will mark "the first new apartment project in the neighborhood in more than a decade." Units will range in size from studio to three-bedroom, with most featuring a little outdoor space of some kind.

Scaled down from an original plan for as many as 670 units, Palmer called the complex a "much needed housing complex [that] is a big win for the downtown Los Angeles community." For those of you who thrill to Palmer's brand of fortress-like Tuscan buildings, you're about two years away from being able to call the Da Vinci home. We hope these floorplans can tide you over until then. Once completed it will also include a fitness center, two pools, a media room, indoor basketball court, landscaped courtyards, and quite a lot of fountains.

oh my! that is good news....like a belated Xmas gift. here are some other snippets from that article that caught my eye...

Quote:
The first phase of the renovation of the market is a "deep cleaning" that already has started, taking place at night when the market is closed -- walls, columns and ceilings are being repainted and the floors cleaned and polished. This is expected to be completed by the fall when Shuldiner and West hope to have put a dozen new vendors in place by then.

In Grand Central Market's 12,000-square-foot basement, Shuldiner says he plans a "foodcrafting space" to be called the Basement at Grand Central Market, where potential beer brewers, charcuterie makers, cheesemongers and wine purveyors could set up shop and take advantage of an additional 16,000 square feet of walk-ins. At the center would be an exhibition kitchen for classes, tastings, studio shoots and private dinners. "It's a wonderful world down there," says Shuldiner, who adds that they are still in talks with architects about conceptualizing the space. "My fantasy is a pocket cafe or sushi bar under the stairs."
in all of this, it's interesting & that the one grocer that so many ppl in dt want to see added to the area...meaning Trader joe's...continues to bypass the hood. TJ's apparently still believes dtla is too downscale or that the number of ppl with $$ in the hood remains too small to justify their opening a store there. I hope they're very wrong, if only cuz that would mean the cleaning & upscaling of the grand central mkt will be a tougher proj to see pencil out. Ambitious improvement plans like what the owner of the Grand Central wants to do mean it's even more important that lots of new housing be added to the hood, asap.

btw, blackcat23, you were saying something recently about certain comments in this thread being repeated over & over, & over, & over again. Well, here's one particular comment about one particular type of proj, regarding one specific devlpt, that I've never.....I mean NEVER...totally NEVER!!....have ever seen expressed in this forum before. No broken record here :

Palmer's projects look out of place and time, and contribute to the disjointed character of the neighborhood.

speaking of which, I incorrectly said a few wks ago that the proj described in the post from pink floyd already was underway. I guess not. A small construction barricade that I noticed at the corner of Temple & Fig must have been installed to block access to a small bldg that has been torn down during the recent past. And though much of the site was fenced off, I do admit that I didn't see the land in the process of being scrapped clean.

I hope it isn't too radical. I really love the authentic, ethnic, diverse feel that the Market currently has.

Agreed. It doesn't sound like they're looking to change the feel of the market though, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Hopefully the overhaul is similar to what Philly did with the Reading Terminal Market. Reading Terminal is a lot older/larger than Grand Central, but it has a similar appeal.

People fixate way too much on getting a Trader Joes into downtown. No one even cares about the products, they just consider it to be a status symbol for the neighborhood.

Trader Joes will happen when it happens. Given the recent positive trends, maybe it'll be sooner rather than later.

And good news re: the Grand Central Market. A nice mix of food purveyors and vendors, such as Cleveland´s West Side Market, or Philly´s Reading Market, would be much welcomed.
