Your comment is more directed at the mall though. I was more joking than anything. Although I do like Lego.

I'm not slamming Lego. It's simply a reflection of the reality that Apple generates PSF sales far higher than any other store.

A thousand bucks would be a pretty big transaction at the Lego store, but that's pretty much one unlocked iPhone + a couple accessories at the Apple store.

Loblaws, CIBC, the liquor store, Perth Dry Cleaners, Hanford-Drewitt, Tip Top, Birks, Reitman's, and Broadway Florists all still exist.

The rest, I think, no longer exist.

That's actually good. Staples current parking lot is a terrible setup.

Are you people serious?
Relevant? Keep shopping online and we will lose most brick and mortar stores, I have been retail based all my working life.
Even so called "RELEVANT" stores are closing as they pay huge rents and can do many sales for a fraction of that cost online.

Where will the replacement jobs come from? The more jobs lost to online operations, the more dismal the economy becomes.

Absolutely. Plus, retail jobs never paid wonderful salaries but the new ones pay less than the ones we once knew or are having troubles.
There fore, to remain competitive, retail can not afford to have experienced staff so many entering retail are students who have loftier ambitions and do not care much or those who are not very motivated. Minimum plus 5 cents an hour?
Tougher to find a truly great person ion most retail settings today. Many of the best ones are closer to retiring or have been burned out and moved on.

So true. As a kid in the 70s/80s, retail associates took their job a Hell of a lot more serious, and were more mature. You were "on stage", and acted like a professional.

I call it "giving that 110% effort".

Yes, most retail sales staff are more concerned about their paycheque than on customer satisfaction.

We are experiencing a great loss of retail jobs to online operations, and so many people are losing their jobs to machines. At some point, there will be chaos in society.

Online operations also create lots of jobs - now lots of those are not local but ...

People still want things now - so much that Amazon has same day delivery in lots of major cities - have expanded into Canada with this - Toronto and Vancouver and maybe Montreal.

I use Amazon all the time and still sometimes pay for next day delivery because I just can't wait for it any longer - if I do I'd just go to the store. I'd love same day delivery.

I try to be optimistic and hope that jobs lost in retail could potentially be replaced by other jobs that support online retail. Also some businesses will just never really work well online - thinking clothing, etc.

There's been lots of analyzing on this now, and many studies have found a direct correlation between brick-and-mortar success and online operations. Simply put - stores that have a great, robust online shop are doing significantly better in the flesh than chains that don't have a good online store, or one at all.

It creates good brand trust and recognition, and give people flexibility. Lots of people may want to go try some things on, then buy them online. Or, need to do an exchange of something they bought online. When e-commerce first started booming, people thought the shop-instore/buy-online folks would be the death, but that's just not happening. People actually spend more money on average online than in stores.

It means bricks-and-mortar can have less staff on shift, and expand their online staff. Running an online retail operation is a staggeringly immense job. Takes a ton of people. Because shoppers have more access, they need many more customer service people on, where before it was just the people who happened to physically come to the store.

I've said it before, buy I think HBC's online operation, and how early the company jumped on board, is the single reason why they're booming right now, and why they avoided the current fate of many other major department stores. Their online shopping experience is near perfect.

So, I went to the Save On Foods - International on McPhillips yesterday. WOW! It's amazing! Does anybody know if there are plans to put up an international store in the south part of the city?

When the Northgate Store opened, I had a pleasant chat with both the Manager and Assistant Manager on duty that particular day asking them this very question. Their reply was no. The Northgate Store is their flag ship store here and there were no plans to have International Sections of this magnitude anywhere else. Of course, this could change depending upon demand.

A couple of days ago, I found a job listing on line for a "unique outlet store" for The Outlet Collection Winnipeg. According to the Recruitment Agency handling the hiring, this store will be the FIRST of its kind for North America. It took some digging, but, I came up with Sephora. The job fair coming up next week will offer retail positions for the first 45 stores announced. My list is currently at 49. There are five anonymous postings which are being handled by five different recruitment companies that I have not as yet figured out.

Yup, when I went there back in January I found eggplant based spread in the Balkan/Eastern European, Turkish/Middle Eastern as well as Russian ethnic food areas. I froze due to sensory overload and couldn't make up my mind as to what to do. Went with Balkan/Eastern European because of my heritage but next time I will try something (slightly) different.

Sensory overload is a very real thing there.

Outlet List

That's basically the same as my list except you listed Quarks twice making your total 48 initially. I also have Addidas, and Garage/Dynamite combined Outlet making 49 so far.
There was some announcement a year or so ago that Nygard was also thinking of setting up shop.

Last edited by laumag; Mar 19, 2017 at 3:55 PM. Reason: No need for the list again.
