There's no reason to whitewash our Chinatown when revitalizing it. And development will happen there, sooner or later. It would be insane to just let it rot, right in the middle of a development boom.
It's a unique part of Winnipeg's cultural history. Vancouver, Toronto, and New York are good examples to use because their downtown Chinatown neighbourhoods live on as cultural landmarks even when they are no longer culturally homogeneous residential areas.
The fact of the matter is that the area needs attention one way or another. Might as well lean into what it already has going for it. Unique architecture, cultural heritage, and existing businesses that people still travel (though maybe not clear across the city) to the neighbourhood for.
I'm not suggesting some tacky Orientalist revival but working with what is already there and granting the area its own vibe that sets it apart from the rest of the Exchange.
