This also means that those proposed high-rise luxury apartments likely won't be built.

(NO GO)
No big loss. I was pretty meh on that from the start. Someone could build something special on that piece of land; those apartments were certainly nothing special.

You guys are too kind. I considered this proposal a hideous piece of crap from the get go. This extremely prime parcel deserves something pretty special, and this stucco wonder more deserving of some third-rate coastal backwater certainly wasn't it. Very good news, in my opinion.

On second thought, I can't think of a third-rate coastal backwater that deserves this design.

I noticed the little two story building downtown on the block bounded by Peachtree Center, Williams, Park Pl and John Wesley Dobbs (behind the Candler building) was demolished today. Progress on GSU's new law building?

YES!!!

http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/print...e-for-business-law-schools.html?page=all
"GSU issued a request for qualifications (RFQ) on Dec. 14 to architects who would design the proposed 200,000-square-foot law building.
Those qualifications are due Jan. 4 2013."

It looks like the new GSU Business & Law Building will take up the entire block. About 8 floors...

http://law.gsu.edu/news/7300.html
(from 2011 but good info + building sketch)

"Late last year, the Georgia State University Foundation made a significant investment in the project with the purchase of a parcel of land at the intersection of John Wesley Dobbs Avenue and Park Place, just north of Woodruff Park, for $17 million. The College of Law will share the site with the J. Mack Robinson College of Business, which also plans to build there. Earlier this year, the state authorized a $5 million bond issue to support design costs for the new College of Law building."

^Fantastic news. Another LARGE parking lot in the heart of Downtown bites the dust. GSU truly is a transformative force.

Final Render?

Here's a more recent render. Considering design wrapped up in fall of 2012, this may be the final design. Pretty pleased with it.

Wow, I had forgotten how big the surface lot was. Had a lot of fun in that building over the years: Mumbo Jumbo was a real treat. Loved the upstairs lounge and the huge fireplace in the dining room

I forget the name of the apartment project planned for the southeast corner of North Ave and the beltline (right at the bridge) but yesterday they had a crane out there dismantling the billboard that stands there so I guess they must be about to start. Yay!

Looks like they were putting in the footings for 100 6th Street

Parking Deck Too?

There's a two story parking deck just south of the building they tore down for the GSU law building. Anyone know if that's biting the dust too? It's really hideous, but has a Subway and a little cleaner in it.

This will be a great addition to add life to a dead block! But they have to clean up the bums around Woodruff Park and Hurt Park. It sucks that these are the only green space for GSU students downtown and are filled with vagrants.

Atlanta City Council orders up downtown plan

The Atlanta City Council voted this week to form a task force to come up with a master development plan for the downtown area.

The idea is to tie together the roster of separate projects in the offing downtown into a cohesive economic magnet.

The list of projects includes the College Football Hall of Fame – which is relocating from Indiana – a new National Center for Civil and Human Rights, a bus-rail terminal that would serve as a focal point for residential and commercial development, and a proposed retractable-roof stadium for the Atlanta Falcons.

The resolution creating the task force was amended by the council’s Community Development Committee to increase the panel’s membership from 15 to 26.

It will include representation from Invest Atlanta – the city’s economic development arm – MARTA, Georgia State University, the Downtown Neighborhood Association, the Metro Atlanta Chamber, the Georgia World Congress Center Authority and Central Atlanta Progress, a downtown business organization.

The resolution calls for spending up to $500,000 on the master plan, enough to hire professional consultants. The task force is to complete its work within six month

i saw the construction today when i got out at peachtree centre. i have to say it's definitely better than what was there before, but honestly i think there needs to be more street level engagement for non-students and faculty, look at the aderhold building on forsyth that has a diner in the bottom floor. it's great to see a parking lot disappear but if it's going to be an insular cube that replaces it, it won't bring a lot of vibrancy to the area.

I disagree. While we all want street level engagement I don't think every building needs to have some space for retail, restaurants, etc. Especially if the demand just isn't there. Just because it doesn't have some street level engagement component doesn't make the building "insular" and I strongly disagree that it won't bring vibrancy to the area. There's going to be students and faculty walking to and from work / school, they're going to going to the restaurants and shops in Fairlie-Poplar, they're going to bring a lot of pedestrian activity to the area, all while adding density, pedestrian activity, and potential customers for surrounding businesses to the area.

With all due respect, what are you talking about? The graphic on that website doesn't even show the ground floor. As one of the few people who has actually seen the CDs for the site, I can say that it DOES have active uses at street level, not blank walls or the like.

Stevens & Wilkinsons, whose office literally overlooks the site, is the lead designer of the project and understands how to do urban buildings better than any other firm in Atlanta. They have been Downtown for decades and have done some of the better new buildings (123 Luckie Street, Centennial Park West, The Ellis rehab, and several mixed-use buildings at Glenwood Park). They'll do an amazing job and really raise the bar for GSU.
