Hey, that would make a great surface parking lot! Super convenient to the rest of downtown.

It would also make a great park and ride lot for those catching the Red Line train downtown on their way to spending the day in Leander.

I guess I'm showing my age, but the "old" convention center doesn't seem old to me. I have a lot of memories of giving talks at conventions there.

In this context, "old" is more like "previous" rather than an ancient structure.

Wanted to bump this thread...

Austin's airport to almost double in size by 2031/2032. Going from 37 gates to 65.

In the image below, the new Concourse B will open with 26 gates (shown in blue and red). Future expansion is expressed in green.

Here is another look at how the airport will look upon Concourse B's opening:

Gate Allotments:
Delta (Concourse A) = 15
American (Concourse A) = 9
Domestic/International CUTE (Concourse A) = 8
Alaska (Concourse A) = 1

Southwest (Concourse B) = 18
United (Concourse B) = 5
Other CUTE (Concourse B) = 3

Other CUTE (Concourse M) = 6

*CUTE gates will be utilized by non-signatory domestic airlines, international carriers, charters, and diversions. Currently, there are 5 signatory airlines and 13 non-signatory airlines serving Austin.

**Gate 13 in Concourse A will serve hardstands as well as Concourse M via bus.

$60 million contract for Austin Light Rail’s 1st phase approved by ATP board

https://www.atptx.org/austin-transit...in-light-rail/

Quote:
AUSTIN (KXAN) — A multi-million dollar design-build contract for the first phase of Austin’s first light rail system was approved on Wednesday.

Austin Transit Partnership (ATP), the local government corporation in charge of Austin’s light rail system, selected Austin Rail Constructors as the contractor for Austin Light Rail.

ATP’s Board unanimously approved the $60 million contract for Austin Rail Constructors (ARC), which is a joint venture between Stacy and Witbeck Inc. and Sundt Construction Inc.

ARC will coordinate and execute the design and construction of “nearly every aspect of the system, including the transitway, tracks, systems, stations, bridges, traffic signals, utilities, drainage structures and streetscape improvements,” according to a press release from ATP.

Wednesday’s contract approval means ATP may begin pre-construction activities and finalize the design for the first phase of what is anticipated to be a multibillion-dollar, multi-phase project for Austin Light Rail.

“This is a big, important milestone for Austin Light Rail,” ATP CEO Greg Canally said. “ATP is highly focused on delivering this much needed mobility investment for Austin, and with this contract now in place, we are on track to begin construction in 2027.

Austin’s first light rail system will feature 15 stations along a nearly 10-mile stretch and consist of all-electric trains running every 5–10 minutes throughout most of the day. Austin Light Rail will be designed to be expandable for future extensions.

Great news, but I am still bummed they axed the downtown subway tunnels. Would have made the system so much more usable.

Tunnels removed.
Service ends at 38th St on the north, service ends short of the airport, service ends ay Oltorf on the south. Based on what we've seen the past 25+ years around rail transit, I would reduce expectations and wouldn't count on the route extensions to materialize.

More disappointment on top of decades of disappointment.

Not worth the cost of the server the website is hosted on, let alone the card stock campaign materials were printed on nor ink that was used. Don’t build it.

That AAS article about Austin's hotel boom said the Fairmont site plan was approved and quoted Douglas Manchester as saying the hotel would start in January with a completion date of Fall 2016. He also said "our architects are deep into creating the final designs...this puts us on track to break ground in January."

The article also said there are two hotels going up on Red River across from Stubbs: Hotel Indigo (134 rooms) and Holiday Inn Express (164 rooms).

I'm confident that the Fairmont will get built, that and Zaza hotel & residence. On the 2 new hotels I had no idea that they started. I'm assuming that the Holiday Inn is the 8 story building that is approved on the corner block of Neches & E. 9th St.?

Indigo Hotel and Holiday Inn Express are part of the same company, so this may be one of those two hotels in one developments.

The north JW Marriott Hotel crane is being jumped today.

They're probably reporting the same thing as this: http://www.bizjournals.com/austin/bl...&ed=2014-02-19

Also, not sure if y'all noticed but the glass has begun to go up on the base of the J.W. Marriott.

austin is awesome, as evidenced by all the austinites hating on new comers for love of the good old days!
development means give and take , things are awesome here is austin, lots of need for improvement and some stuff is sad to see go... but there are many instances of cool stuff happening too .... good scene and music are still thriving

I find it interesting how people are afraid of the outsiders ruining the good old days, reminds me of madmen....
I will say we need another Leslie and kinky

I could definitely do without another Leslie.

As for the restaurant announced for Seaholm, it says it's going to be 4 stories (w/ a rooftop deck) and you can ascend stairs through the old boiler. Sounds like it'll be inside the actual power plant. Maybe it'll have some public access after all.
