Anyone know what happened to Grainfields? We quit going because they kept jacking up their prices every few months and the quality of food had really gone downhill. They finally just close because they weren't making enough money anymore?

I know someone who worked there. Apparently the owners showed up one day to find that the Sheriff had seized the building & changed the locks overnight. The Sheriff moving in would indicate money owing to creditors.

OT: Grainfields

Maybe they closed because they were never open. Whenever we desired to go to a family-style restaurant for dinner, Grainfields was always on the list. And was always closed at 7 PM or some ridiculously early hour. As well, their breakfasts were expensive and nothing to make return trips for.

It is the FCC Tower on Hamilton St. with Hill Centre Tower II in the background. They were built concurrently in the early 90's.

This is definitely one of my favorite pics of Regina of all time, with regards to construction.

I noticed this morning that the City has finally begun reconstruction of the 11th Ave sidewalk in front of Broad Street Crossing. Let's hope they actually plant some trees in sidewalk to partially obscure the vast parking lost in front. The painted on trees are the Broad Street side just don't cut it.

From the sounds of it, it would have been built with green-energy research in mind... and possibly used for green energy as well, since it says Phys Plant?

The U of R calls the department that is in charge of all of its buildings "Physical Plant".

NRC Centre for Sustainable Infrastructure Research is probably what this refers to. It is currently in another builing in the reseach park on campus. I assume they were planning their own building at one time but that is now shelved.

Ah, ok... well, that makes sense then. For some reason, I thought that Physical Plant was only used for the two current power buildings.

The Diocese lands are moving pretty quick, has anybody driven by it today? ALOT of dirt is being dug up (probably for pipes and whatnot).

Also, Im not sure if anybody goes out there often, but I drove past it the other day and saw that "The Creeks" subdivision has a pretty big crane up right now (highrise type of crane). Any ideas on what that could be for??

Yeah .. I was in Regina during the early 90's .. and construction was taking off. The FCC, McCallum Hill Tower 2, Wascana Energy and Crown Life were all constructed over a realitively short period.

Grant Devine was calling Regina the new Toronto.

How silly! Toronto may be going a little too far, although I bet not much people disagreed with that statement since those were Regina's "Calgary - style" boom days!

Noticed today that the whole northend of the old Superstore on Dewdney is fenced off with lots of big machinery in the parking lot. Looks like this project is finally going to be starting and it can't come soon enough.

I'm not a huge Grant Devine supporter .. but I will give him credit for one thing. He was great at getting the province excited. When those building were going up, people in the city and province were really excited about what the future would bring.

When he made various comments about Regina in comparison to Toronto .. the locals ate it up like butterscotch.

Was that comment made as a general comment or in relation to Crown Life? Something like 800 people moved to Regina from Toronto as part of that business relocation? That might be part of it as well. Not solely a PR message.

Anyone heard more about the "well know" that's going into Grainfields (I was wondering about Milestones)? Timeline for opening?

Saw that Earl's is advertising for staff at the Kelsey's East location -- sounds like a Spring 2009 opening.
