This model always made me wonder if the bottom was black glass or just in the shadows. Hard to say how accurate this is.

Cool idea. It's like the glass and the ventilated parts are reversed on the different facades. More glass facing the street, less on the side of the building. Still looks nicely done for a parking podium

No we don't. I think they had a physical model picture somewhere in the announcements at some point, but no renderings of all sides I know of. Given the terrifying ugliness of the northern garage wall, the inquiring minds really want to know.

This Crap called cladding on parking is just DEGRADING our city on the pedestrian level. The City Of Austin is allowing corporate, out of the city, Temporary owners, CALL the shots. ALL of us who reside in the city, NOW and into the FUTURE are just expected to accept these FOR PORFIT facades? WOW. I Do not accept this. Why do the people of Austin?

For all that I generally agree with the sentiment, I don't think this is a Texas- or Austin-specific thing. Outside a handful of cities, this building could almost certainly get built anywhere else in North America. I also don't see what would stop this from being built anywhere else outside of western Europe, Japan, and a few other places. For example, I think this building is pretty boring and will ultimately be pretty ugly (especially at street level), but while it would be sorely out of place in Barcelona, I could absolutely see something similar be built in Vancouver, CDMX, Shanghai, Hong Kong, or a number of other places.

IMO, it really just boils down to a combination of Austin's (and all of the U.S.'s save for 3-4 cities) reliance on cars and a subsequent need for large amounts of parking, coupled with very little geographical/geological or legal/financial pressure to put the parking underground. Save for the parking podium, the rest of the complaints about this building can really boil down to a dislike of certain architectural styles generally.
